A charming and historic B&B in a quiet part of San Francisco. Well kept rooms with a classic traditional decor and modern amenities. Delicious breakfast and afternoon treats and very personable and friendly service. Convenient access to public transportation for touring the city.

We enjoyed our stay Monte Cristo B&B in back in October and decided to stay there again. The neighborhood is wonderful with a locals vibe and within walking distance to Spruce restaurant - one for SF's best dining. Breakfast was generous with hot options and service friendly and helpful. This time, we stayed in room 17 and would not have chosen this room except the B&B was at capacity. This room was smaller than our previous room with no view and the worst of all it was above the kitchen and early in the morning (~6a.m.) we could hear the water pipes and noise below. We plan to stay here again, but will be more choosy with what room we stay in. We recommend this place for anyone not interested in staying with loads of tourists in Union Square.

Over the past 20 years the Monte Cristo has remained the best bed and breakfast in the City! We love love everything about it from our host's exceptional service to the amazing breakfasts...this is the best!

I stayed here for 5 nights to attend a conference. Having lived in San Francisco in the past, I remember how noisy the downtown traffic could be, so I decided to stay a little further outside the downtown core. The B & B was wonderfully quiet and although I stayed in the tiny Broderick room, it met my needs very nicely! The cookies in the dining room that were always there as I returned late in the day were so delicious, as was the on-going availability of coffee and tea. Although I walked everywhere, there is also a bus route right out front which makes it very convenient for traveling around.

Beautiful rooms, accommodating and helpful staff, delicious breakfasts with both continental offerings and made-to-order hot items. Central location made for easy access to city sights. Wonderful--made for a memorable anniversary trip!

I flew into San Francisco for my nephew's marriage. It was a short stay. Came in on Saturday and left late Sunday. I love my room. It was small and just perfect. If I am ever in San Francisco again I would stay at this B&B. The people were so nice and accommodating..

I was on a business trip that had me in the city, yet near to my client's home and I found the neighborhood to be perfect. Walking distance to restaurants, St. Dominic's for Mass and easy parking on the street. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast was wonderful. Terry is such a great hostess! And Jack was welcoming and helpful as well. The place was immaculate and had all the amenities you need.

In a lovely part of San Francisco well serviced by bus route to go to Fishermans wharf and Golden Gate Park. Lots of local restaurants nearby, Old fashioned decor in rooms, but very modern bathrooms. Comfy beds. Very good breakfast. Would stay there again.

Enjoyed our stay at the Monte Cristo B&B very much...starting with the warm welcome at the door, to the cleanliness of the room, comfy bed, great location and delicious home cooked breakfasts. Would go back in a minute!

I would stay again certainly. Prior to my need to stay in Pacific Heights (niece graduation from Nursing School) I was only really familiar with the City Center and the Wharf area. Monte Cristo was so easy to get to off BART via bus #1 -- and a great place to stay. Authentic period charm -with desirable MODERN useful touches, like bath upgrades, lighting, keyless latches - with one exception, my stay coincided with an outrageous heat wave!!!! And the entire property was roasting, even with the use of a fan in my wide open window overnight each night. TOO WARM for sleeping. Not enough air circulation. That is rare enough for the City that this should not deter other travelers -- I'm just reporting my experience. My sister's room was very hot also -- it wasn't just me. But the friendly and well-prepared staff had fans to spare for those who wanted them. Although breakfast hours begin at 7:30, I found an air pot of great coffee in the dining room at 5 am when I had to depart on my last morning. I would stay at the Monte Cristo again even if I had other destinations in mind in the City -- because transit is so easy and fun to ride.

We stayed here in late April, early May. There was record heat and the B&B does not have a/c apparently. Our room was extremely hot...80 degrees, we had to buy a fan to keep us cool. Otherwise, the B&B was quite nice, our room was very clean and updated. The host was helpful in recommending places to eat locally and attractions to see. Overall nice, will probably try to stay closer to downtown next time in San Francisco.
4.2 on May 15, 2014
I was a bit disappointed in the room size and narrow staircase at the Monte Cristo. It was also stressful dealing with the parking situation, but that is typical for San Francisco. I think that the price we paid was a bit steep considering that parking was not included and the room was quite tiny.
4.4 on May 12, 2014
I stayed in a deluxe petite queen suite at the Monte Cristo during a recent and brief stay for business. The room was small, but very comfortable for one. The bed was very comfortable and the common areas were great - quiet, cozy, welcoming. I had a breakfast meeting and wasn't able to take advantage of the wonderful smells wafting from the dining room as I left, but so appreciated the snacks that were left out during the day as well as the warm and helpful hospitality extended by our host, Jack. I also appreciated the ability to work in the common area for a couple of hours while waiting for my event to begin following checking out. This B&B is in a great area of the city - walking distance to great boutique shopping and restaurants and an easy Uber or cab ride to other areas. If you want a bit of a respite from the hustle and bustle of city work or leisure (not to mention delicious cookies and chocolates), just step into this lovely place and feel the peace of days gone by - balanced nicely by modern-day hospitality and attention. Great stay - I'll be back!

My wife and I had a 3-night stay at the Monte Cristo. The room was small but clean. Old, certainly, since the building has been around for 130+ years, but I like that better than the sheetrock plainness of modern motels. Breakfast was good: eggs and toast from the kitchen, plus various cereals/granola, orange juice, nuts, fruit, coffee. Coffee and tea is available around the clock, as are afternoon cookies. Internet service was fast enough to stream a netflix. All in all, a good stay.
4.8 on April 21, 2014
The venue was exactly as described. The room was well appointed with good quality incidentals. The breakfasts were generous and well prepared by the very friendly, Kerry. Big city accommodation is always pricey but I felt we got our money's worth. We would definitely stay there again.

The breakfast options were generous with fresh fruit and other gourmet options.

Loved staying at Monte Cristo (had business dinner nearby). I expect to return - lovely details and a feel of times gone by in a wonderful San Francisco neighborhood, combined with good breakfast and wonderful service by Terry. Good valuenfor SannFrancisco (I usually stay in business hotels downtown and pay much more, and felt I got a lot for the money here). The more you slow down, the more you notice attention to detail - so, really appreciated the opportunity to slow down into a more relaxed pace. Great bathroom (could be a liability in an old house and insteadnwasbturned into a highlight...).

Characteristically dark hallways that lead you to a smallish room but has everything you need. The bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in when travelling. The bathroom was super modern with a fancy toilet and automatic lighting. The windows open which is a plus for me and they have a double pane window on the inside that you can pull closed to reduce street noise. The breakfast was great as they'll make what you want and there's also tons of fruit and pastries. Parking was easy.
4.6 on January 22, 2014
We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight at the Monte Cristo. Very charming and quiet, and we were able to find free street parking at the corner! The bed was incredibly comfortable, sheets were luxuriously soft! The bathroom was bright and modern and I was surprisingly spoiled by the heated toilet seat--who knew?! Enjoyed homemade type cookies and coffee/tea in the afternoon, but missed the breakfast spread the next morning, so can't comment on that. The hostess put the food away not realizing we hadn't come down yet. Not to worry, she cheerfully brought us everything we wanted, making my eggs to order (and perfectly) so all was well. Our room was small and lacking in natural light (#16) but it was the last king room available. The size didn't bother me, as we were hardly in it, but the darkness did. The plus was that it was on the back side facing the quiet courtyard. We looked into other rooms the next morning and those on the front were nice and bright (but on the street--not sure it it's noisy). My only real complaint was that the lamps next to the beds provided too little light to read by. Plenty of top light (which I don't find appealing), but that doesn't help once you're in bed. I get wanting to conserve electricity and save money, but the light provided by those lamps was useless.

The rooms are so neat, it is literally a bedroom converted into a hotel room. There is a shower built into the bedroom that stands alone. There is no separated shower/bathroom area...it's all one room. Very unique experience! Their staff were very professional. The rooms were clean. The value of the room was phenomenal! Great, great area. I would hands down come back.

When I booked my stay, the innkeeper said that I could have an economy room. I had visions of a motel-esque room. Especially because of the lower price. Not at all! The room was well appointed, with a very modern bathroom, GREAT technology (wireless and abundant outlets), and very charming breakfast (quiche served every day in addition to many kinds of fruits, nuts, granola, pastry, etc.). Loved it! When I come back to San Francisco, I'll be staying there.

Interesting combination of old world charm bedroom decorated with antiques and a very hi-tech modern bathroom. Lots of shelving, heated towel rack, heated toilet seat, bidet features and other 'fancy enhancements. Lovely rain-shower. Dining room staff friendly and accommodating. Location was great. Only 2 criticisms: desk staff/onsite mgr. not onsite much of our stay - needed to phone & leave messages; noisy hallway...perhaps more carpet padding would've helped.

Loved our stay at the Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast. The bathrooms had been recently updated & were fantastic! My husband LOVED the heated toilet seat with the wash & dry, LoL. The shower had great water pressure. My husband & I love to sleep with the noise of a box-fan. Jack was very quick to accommodate our needs & grabbed one out of a closet for us. Perfect! Would certainly stay there again & recommend this property!

The Monte Cristo is a pleasant, restful break from the crowds and traffic of downtown San. Francisco. The proprietors are friendly, helpful and hospitable. Guest rooms and downstairs common areas are all very clean. The dining room hostess is warm, friendly and welcoming; she offered to cook something from the kitchen just for me. Updated bathrooms are nice except that there are no hand rails in the shower/tub, which I find worrisome, especially for older guests. Also, I understand why guest room lights are on a timer, however, lights went out while I was in the shower--I could see nothing and there was NOTHING to grab onto, while I tried to grope around to get out w/o falling to turn the lights on again!! This is a potentially dangerous situation, which needs to be corrected. Other than that particular issue, I enjoyed my stay at the Monte Cristo.

The Monte-Cristo is a rare find. I've stayed in Bed and Breakfasts before but always in a small New England town and never in a city. I truly enjoyed my stay. The staff was helpful, my room was clean, comfortable, and quiet, and best of all the price-point was very affordable. I found myself recommending the Monte Cristo to my San Francisco/Bay area friends during my stay.

We have stayed at the Monte Cristo several times and wouldn't stay anywhere else! The rooms are beautiful, decorated with gorgeous antiques, great beds and AWESOME bathrooms! It's very clean throughout, quiet and relaxing and a bus stop right outside the front door. Jack is an excellent host and then there is Terri cooking and serving breakfast. What a gem she is! She makes you feel like you are the most important people she has ever met. Love to talk to her and the food is outstanding. If you have a problem with stairs, probably should request a first floor room but other than that not ONE negative in all the times we've stayed. Just can't wait to go back.

I stayed overnight while in San Francisco for an appointment at UCSF. I felt at home immediately, and I'm looking forward to my next visit. Location was out of the way (30 minute bus ride to downtown), but was worth it. We didn't mind taking the bus system as the cost was less than the downtown hotels. The room was surprisingly quiet as we were beside a street and near a fire hall. We slept very well.Breakfasts were good with made to order eggs and a variety of fresh fruits and yogurt. Overall a good stay and I would recommend to those that don't mind being away from the downtown.

My wife and I stayed four nights recently at the Montechristo and had a tremendous time. The room -- simple and quiet yet somehow luxurious -- enfolded us and the marvelous breakfasts served by Terry began every day with a lift. Nearness to fantastic restaurants, the Presidio trails, and the Golden Gate strand was also a major plus.

Staff was freindly, and helpful. the parking was OK, but it's San Francisco, so, what can you expect. No air conditioning (it was particularly warm during our stay,) Room was charming and the bed was better than I thought. The dining area looked cozy, but we did not take advantage of the breakfasts. The room rates seemed a little high but again this is San Francisco.

My wife and I spent three days in San Francisco. It was America's Cup last WE. Desperatly looping for late reservation reached Monte Cristo B&B by chance. What a nice surprise!!! Despite the cost (anyway it is worth) the room was charming, clean, with everything you need. The management was very welcoming and warm and helped us with all our requests. Location is great: bus stops in front of the B&B, restaurants nearby, stores for all you need at walking distance. Delicious breakfast and terrific cookies!!!!!! Great time. Thank you

We arrived very late and was worried that there would be no one to greet us; however, at 11:30 PM, a very kind understanding gentleman checked us in and showed us to our room. It was very small but immaculate; the bathroom appeared to be new, a wonderful shower! We left at 7:00 so we could not enjoy the breakfast, but someone was kind enough to leave us a bag of "breakfast goodies" so that we had something to eat before our early departure for UCSF! Delicious! We are returning next week for another visit and will be able to stay for breakfast this time! Even though this B&B is located right on the street, we heard absolutely nothing!!! Parked right on the street!

I had never stayed at a bed & breakfast but was I so surprised with the Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast! I wanted to visit my son who is a student at SFSU before he started school. I was on a limited budget and I wanted to take my sister who was recovering from an eye injury. When we got there we were delighted at the personal touch we received from Jack and Terry! I was treated as though I was a regular customer. They provided a free breakfast prepared by Terry and it was delicious! Fresh fruit, coffee, cereal, yogart, and much more!. After a long day of shopping and touring the great city of San Francisco, we were able to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea and sweets. My sister and I would retire, watch TV and snack on cookies, coffee and tea! How sweet is that? I will go back and recommend it to all my friends. I've already started my referral to the Monte Cristo!! Yea!!!!

We stayed here to be close to my father who was at UCSF. It was a great spot. We walked to several restaurants - Girabaldi's was fantastic. The rooms were recently renovated and the bathrooms were great. Loved the heated toilet seat! The breakfasts and great coffee were definitely the highlight. I would stay there again for that alone. They made eggs to order and often had a delicious quiche too. This place has a great feel. You can't go wrong.

I had stayed here based on a reccommendation. The room was clean and neat, but the ceiling creaked all night like there was dripping water. The tv did not work and the phone never worked when somone was trying to call me in my room. I never received any help when I had called and left a message to fix these issues. Someone was scraping the walls in one of the other rooms unitl 10:00 pm one night making it difficult to sleep. Breakfast was merely OK and the 7:30 start time for breakfast is quite late and we ususally missed breakfast due to the fact we were there on business and we needed to leave by 7:30. Might be OK if you were there on a holiday. Summary- OK rooms and poor service.

Nice but not spectacular. The location is difficult for walking but a $15 dollar cab ride will get you to just about anywhere you wish to go. The folks are very nice and knowledgeable – not over the top. I would say the service was maybe slightly less than what I expected – or have experienced elsewhere but still good. The rooms are small but very clean and cool amenities. The breakfast was not great but okay – on par with hotels that have complementary service. All in all it was nice and I would recommend it but don’t have super high expectations.

If you are planning a trip to San Francisco and need a place to stay, look no further. The Monte Cristo B & B offers charming decor, exceptionally clean (and updated!) bathrooms, delicious food and snacks and an overall peaceful environment. My husband and I breathed a sigh of relief when we finally made it to the Monte Cristo after a week of traveling and moving around - everything was so lovely and inviting. We stayed in room 16 which also had a lovely view. There are many restaurants within walking distance and street parking is available. One of our favorite B & Bs of all time!

My husband and I enjoyed a 3 night stay at the Monte Cristo B&B in early July. I accompanied my husband on his business trip to the SemiCon West Show in San Francisco and we booked room 4 in this beautifully decorated B&B. While we had a small room it was big on charm and the bed was very comfortable. Each morning we had a delicious breakfast made by the owner, who is an incredibly hospitable woman. I visited the city while my husband was at work and there is a bus stop right out side the door. It is very convenient to get to and from most any place in the city. I walked to the Presidio one day and rode the bus to Haight/Ashbury another. It was quiet and clean and if I ever make it back to San Francisco I know I will be staying at this perfect retreat.

This is a wonderful B&B if you've already been to San Francisco & want to just relax. It's in a residential area with little shops & restaurants. Most of the shops close at 7:00 & so do some of the restaurants. So if you're looking for the S.F. shopping, theatre & clubs, this is not necessarily the place for you. The rooms have all been updated & the bathroom is to "die" for. The breakfast is very nice. The woman who sets it up is very friendly & helpful. There is fruit, yogurt & pastry & you can get eggs & quiche from the kitchen. I was told that never changes. If you are there more than 2 days, then it would be boring. All in all a nice B&B

While visiting relatives we chose the Monte Cristo for it's convenient location. We stayed in room 6 on the first floor. It was clean, spacious and well appointed. The owner has done a wonderful job of updating this B&B while keeping the integrity of its historical architecture. The staff was more than friendly and the breakfast was delicious. Fresh fruit, bakery, yogurt, juice, and coffee were always offered but you could also order eggs, bacon, and toast. We will most definitely stay here again when we're in the Bay Area.

first room we stayed in was GREAT!!!! then because we made a last minute decision to stay longer, that room was no longer available so we had to move to the room next door Service was fantastic, helping us, etc but the room was smaller, the bath smaller, and just not up to the standards of the first room. I guess we should have stayed in the second room first, and then moved and the experience would have been different.

Nice clean, quiet, friendly place to stay. Excellent service.
3.4 on May 22, 2013
The location was very good for us...a quiet neighborhood. Parking our rental car was no problem. The bathroom had just been beautifully renovated, but towel bars had not been installed, and Kleenex was absent. Breakfast and afternoon snacks very good. Checkout a little confusing (no front desk person on duty)...we checked out informally with the cook. Would definitely stay here again.

Nice room even though small. We were on the street but was still quiet. Bathrooms are updated and very nice. Lots of choices for breakfast. Would stay here again.

This was my fourth stay at the Monte Cristo and it gets better each time. Jack and his staff are very accommodating and helpful at every turn. Even though the place was full to capacity (during the week!) there was very little noise or distraction, everyone friendly. Parking is free on the streets and it is close to every convenience. Just a short walk to restaurants, grocery, etc. I love staying here and highly recommend if you want the B&B experience.

If you want to be pampered and well-fed, then this is the place. The rooms are nicely furnished with comfortable beds, antiques, free wifi and flat screen TVs with my favorite cable channels. Terry makes the crispiest bacon and great eggs and quiche. She cooks each breakfast to order so your meal is fresh and hot. There was always a great selection of fresh fruit. This B&B is located right on the 2 and 43 Muni lines and near some of San Francisco's best restaurants. Our host, Jack, has a nice list of local places. Garibaldi's was a great recommendation, although my personal favorite is still Spruce. I stayed in the tiny room which was perfect for one person. The Muni unlimited 1 to 7 day passports are really handy so you don't need to carry money for the bus, street cars and cable cars. There are several bus lines that take you to BART to get to either SFO or OAK airports. This place is so much nicer than the busy downtown hotels, especially if you prefer a good walk around the Presidio to a fitness center.

We would definitely stay here again. One thing you have to know about San Francisco is that it is a VERY noisy city. Sirens go all night. At hotels we've been at before, we have been constantly awoken by this throughout the night. At Monte Cristo, they have windows that ensure no noise from the outside world, even though we were at street level. This was very important to me. So peaceful! Room was lovely, on the smaller side, but this was disclosed before the reservation, so no surprise. Comfy bed, luxury linens. The building is circa 1895, so very old (not in a bad way), with tons of charm and graceful elegance. Breakfast was sort of continental with granola, fruit, croissant, yogurt, juice etc., or eggs cooked to order (we had omelets). And you weren't locked in to either/or. We had some of both. Lots of choices. Very friendly, as well. Would definitely recommend.

Monte Cristo BnB is nicely situated in a beautiful neighborhood in San Fransisco. The master suite was well layed out, clean, homey, and nicely furnished. My only note of caution is make sure the online price of the room you book matches the price listed in the confirmation email.

I love it so much!!! Feels like home and makes me feel happy... I would come back to San Francisco just to come and stay here again. It's a magical sanctuary where I can escape from the world if I want to. Very highly recommend.

When we arrived we were heartily welcomed and made to feel comfortable. Our room was small, but space was very smartly used. It was clean and felt very good energetically. I was so happy to be on the first floor. This has not often been my experience in other b & b's. Every morning we were offered a generous, homemade breakfast , and we ate in a charming, pleasant atmosphere. The location of the b and b was very convenient for us, and we enjoyed that section of San Francisco. I would be happy to return on another visit.

Staying at the Monte Cristo Bed and Breakfast was a pleasure!! The attention to detail is apparent in every aspect of this B&B. Jack, the owner who greeted us, was very welcoming. The room was beautifully decorated in antique furniture, with the latest bath facilities. Everything was very clean and lovingly taken care of. The breakfast was delicious with a wide choice of fresh and dried fruits and nuts, cereals, yogurts, chocolates, herbal and black teas, and fresh brewed coffee as well as cooked dishes from the kitchen. The location is in a lovely area of SF with easy access to public transportation. It is reasonably priced and we highly recommend it. Terry was the perfect hostess - warm and welcoming. Thank you!!

Our family just completed a wonderful weekend in San Franciso at the Mote Cristo. What a welcome pleasure it was to spend it together at this fabulous B&B. The staff were lovely and helpful, breakfast was generous and tasty, the rooms were comfy and parking nearby was not a huge issue (as it can be horrible to try to park in San Francisco).
4.6 on December 12, 2012
First of all, I had no expectations and was somewhat apprehensive about going to a B&B in the City but this place was a lot of fun to stay at for the weekend. The free WIFI, free parking, uniqueness of the building and rooms and the general location within S.F. made our trip totally awesome. I would definitely look to stay there again and would highly recommend this place.

I spent two nights - Thanksgiving Day and Friday at the Monte Cristo. Same as last year. My friends live on Bush St., just around the corner. The room was small but nice. The breakfast was quite good. The art, decorations, and magazines were excellent. I would recommend it strongly.

I was warmly greeted upon my arrival. As a female by myself, I felt very safe and comfortable. The staff was approachable and helpful. I found the Monte Cristo lovely and I plan to return with my mother in a few weeks. The dining review is average is inaccurate. I tried not to rate it as I did not eat there.

I took my girlfriend to this perfect B & B by the Bay for her Birthday. She loved the place, very romantic and a great breakfast! Also, we had a nice city light view of downtown SF. This is a nice Victorian B & B located in Pacific Heights, which is one after another Victorian homes all along the streets. There are several walking tours in this neighborhood. This is a little off the beaten path, cabs ranged from $10 to $25 to different areas. One block away on California, which is a major street running to the bay and downtown, where you can get a cab or a bus ($2.00). We had a great time and Jack was very helpful. We both give five big stars. This is truly a special fine.
4.6 on October 25, 2012
Firstly, Jack was super helpful, and made everything easy for me, even though my husband and I were showing up late on the night we were staying there. The building looked drab on the outside, and the security gate made me a little concerned at first, but once we were inside, we saw how lovely the house and the rooms were. Jack and Carl have done a great job modernizing the rooms while keeping a vintage feel overall with the place. Our room was clean, and the furniture beautiful. The breakfast was also very tasty - a deluxe continental with fresh fruit, granola, milk, juice, dried fruit, and mixed nuts. They also had eggs made to order. That particular day, they had a bacon quiche that my husband thought was delicious. Since I don't eat meat, they kindly made me scrambled eggs and toast, and would have made a veggie omelet too. The price was a bit high for me, but these were very nice and intimate accommodations for a somewhat higher price than what we would have paid at a hotel. Advice about parking: at the time of our stay, only the north side of Euclid was available for unrestricted parking. Check with Jack before you go.
5 on October 23, 2012
This is the best B&B we've ever stayed in! The bed was comfy, it was clean, the breakfast was amazing with tons of choices. The only problem was that it is a bit out of the way from touristic sightings.
3.0 on October 22, 2012
This B & B has historical charm with modern updates in the rooms. It was clean and spacious & we had a delicious breakfast. The only downside was that our room had NO AIR CONDITIONING, FAN, or air movement of any kind, except for the window. We were on the second floor, but I felt uncomfortable keeping it open all night, especially w/o a screen on the window. We were in SF on an 80 degree day & this was too stuffy, even though we got back to our room close to 1am. I would recommend this B &B, but you may want to pack a small fan. The street was very quiet, even though there was the bus parking lot just down the street. I would love to go back, but now I know I will bring a fan with me.

We stayed in Room 1 with bedroom and sitting room, for four nights. The room was immaculate with a very comfortable king sized bed and recently redone bathroom. There were double windows so despite being located on a busy corner, it was very quiet. The breakfast was good with a nice variety of fruits and pastries, quiche and eggs cooked to order. The neighborhood is wonderful, with plenty places to eat and shop just down the hill from Pacific Heights: a walker's delight.

We stayed a week, and Monte Cristo consistently exceeded expectations. Our room was beautifully appointed. Attention to detail was everywhere, and personal attention made my 89 year old mother feel like a queen. I loved the changing variety of premium fruit every day, just one component of an array of delicous options. Cooked to order eggs were divine. Could go on and on. In short, highly recommended.

Nice selection of fruit and pastries, but the cooked kitchen breakfast selection is very limited. All day tea and coffee is very convenient and the staff is very helpful. This is more of a boutique hotel with a breakfast than the usual cozy bed and breakfast feel.

Beautifully decorated! I would come here for the toilet seats alone!
5 on October 01, 2012
The owners and staff of The Monte Cristo are really the kind of people you want running a BnB; they are friendly, accommodating and supportive. From the moment I walked in an checked-in with Jack to the morning breakfast that was sometimes brought to my room because I was on a conference call and couldn't make it downstairs in time to the safe keeping of my luggage for half a day after I had checked out, The Monte Cristo felt like home !! Jack and Terry thanks for making my time in SF a great success!! I will be back at The Monte Cristo for sure !!!

My stay was very pleasant, no disruptions. My room was big and comfortable. I loved the contemporary bathroom. The service was friendly and helpful. They have a computer available for guests, so I was able to print my airline boarding pass; the amenities were a big plus: blow-dryer, iron and ironing board and portable fan. Public transportation near by. I felt safe staying here alone. I highly recommend the Monte Cristo for anyone traveling alone.

The staff was so accomodating; greeting us on a late-night arrival, helping with car and bike rentals, and producing a delicious breakfast daily. It's like staying in a big house in the middle of a city and was so nice and quiet. The bus was just a quick block or two out the door to get around. We'd go back in a minute!

Lovely B&B in beautiful Pacific Heights area. Easy walk to some nice shopping and restaurants. Our room, #16, was quiet, clean and nicely appointed. The breakfast quiche was excellent as well as the assortment of fruit, muffins, yogurt, etc. The cookies and/or cake that were available in the afternoon and evening were also delicious. Coffee and nice selection of teas always available. We would definitely stay there again!

What a great surprise the Monte Cristo was for us as it exceeded all of our expectations! The unique decor added to the old world ambiance, but better yet the service was of old world style as well; by that I mean, intimate and personal, caring and accommodating--none of this "refer to it on our website" or "call later." The breakfast in the cozy dining area of the facility lends itself to make new and immediate friendships as couples enjoy homemade quiche or eggs cooked any style along with a wide variety of scrumptious breakfast buffet items, including yogurt, fresh and dried fruit, cereals, juices, delicious coffee or tea and decadent pastries. I highly recommend staying at the Monte Cristo which is located near so many of San Francisco's grandest attractions, convenient to public transportation, super restaurants, shopping and more!
3.6 on September 11, 2012
The room was historic and well appointed. The bathroom was small but functional, (hair-dryer included) and everything was clean and neat. Breakfast was outstanding each morning with eggs cooked to order and fresh fruit. The staff was friendly and helpful always! We loved the area. There are wonderful Italian restaurants just 2 blocks up, and the Presidio is at the end of the street, and an easy walk through it takes you to the base of the Golden Gate bridge. Beautiful!! We would stay here again!! Thanks to Jack for helping us with the car rental glitch!! Pam & Craig

My wife and I stayed here for one night during a stay in the Bay Area. Before we had stayed near Fisherman's Wharf and didn't enjoy the crowds and touristy atmosphere. At the Monte Cristo, it felt much more like true San Francisco. The building is old and historical, and some might find that too cramped, but we loved the atmosphere and did not mind the small bedrooms. The staff was incredibly friendly and breakfast was fantastic. On top of that, you will do no better as far as cost goes for lodging in San Francisco unless you use a discount site like hotwire, which leaves you guessing where exactly you'll end up. When we return to the Bay Area, my wife and I would be very likely to stay here again.
5 on September 07, 2012
We were extremely happy with our stay at the Monte Cristo. Everything was top notch - the rooms, common areas, and breakfast were all wonderful. The owner was very personable and accommodating. The location was good - a nice walk (with a few steep streets) to Union Street and the Marina district. We would definitely stay there again!

Great location for a wedding we were attending in the neighborhood, and reception at the Presidio of SF. Close to Golden Gate Park museums et al. Laurel Heights district had great delis and small shops, too. Pretty far from main tourist attractions but quiet location, historical character of the inn, reasonable prices and availability made it a very good choice for our stay.

The Monte Cristo B & B was everything we could want, and more. We stayed in Room 10, nice and cozy, warm and inviting, with a nice queen bed. There was plenty of room to store our clothes and luggage. The breakfast was always good and got even better every morning when Terry welcomed us, and asked "Can I get you something from the kitchen?" We had no idea a warm breakfast was part of the deal! Terry and Jack were both wonderful. The nicest thing during our stay- I bought champagne to celebrate my boyfriend's 50th birthday, and found nowhere to keep it cool. So I left it in the room in the sink to keep cool. When we came back for the evening, it was in a bucket full of ice, with two champagne flutes. You couldn't have done better to make a special night any nicer. THANKS- a great intimate hotel, and a great value.

Sadly, we only got to stay at the Monte Cristo for one night. We would have loved to stay longer! The bed and breakfast is super charming, and we loved the decor of the Gothic Room where we stayed. We were located on the street side but didn't notice any city noise. It was also super easy to find parking nearby. One of our favorite parts was breakfast the next day - excellent cooking and such a charming breakfast room! A great value for the city.

Nice rooms and location, friendly service and great breakfast... I will definitely consider staying at Monte Cristo next time I am visting San Francisco.
3.8 on August 25, 2012
I enjoyed my stay at the Monte Cristo. It was my first experience at a B&B. It is a home away from home. The Pacific Heights shopping and dining area are within walking distance. Several Muni bus routes come close to the area, and from that you can get downtown or anywhere else through a transfer. If you have a car, you may have to park a little ways away since the only parking is on the surrounding streets, but that's no big deal. Overall, an enjoyable experience on my annual trip to San Francisco.

My husband and I stayed at the Monte Cristo for our 25th anniversary. The place was pleasant, clean and quiet. We enjoyed the breakfast each morning, and the woman who made it was so pleasant and charming. The innkeepers were always willing to offer help and suggestions. It was close enough to the middle of the city that it was easy to get there, but you were not overwhelmed by tourists! I would really recommend this Inn....
3.8 on August 16, 2012
The best things about the Monte Cristo are the breakfast and the staff. Breakfast is terrific and the staff are friendly and accommodating. The rooms are tiny and a little dark for my taste. They are beautifully furnished and the bathroom is small but luxurious. I think it is a decent value especially if you like to start the day with a nice breakfast. Also coffee, tea and cookies are available when you return tired in the afternoon.

We've now stayed at the Monte Cristo three times and each time have been delighted. The rooms are wonderful - full of character and history, yet wonderfully "updated" and very comfortable. Not large - but we are almost never in the room, so that doesn't matter for us. The location is fantastic - so close to everything in Laurel Village.
4.6 on August 06, 2012
Room was comfortable and very quiet, with a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was delicious with lots of options. Service was good and the location - though not right in the heart of a "happening" part of San Francisco, provides easy access to the Marina through the Presidio, shops/restaurants on Sacramento Street, and straight shot down California Street to downtown.

This is a great little B&B, tucked away in a very nice and safe neighbourhood, away from all the hustle and bustle of downtown, and just a stone's throw away from Golden Gate Park and Haight-Ashbury. It was very quiet and cozy, and has a lot of old victorian charm. Jack and Terry did a great job of making us feel welcome and comfortable, and made extra efforts to accommodate our vegan diet. Having a private bathroom was a bonus! And the bed in room 3 was so comfortable! We slept like babies! We'd visit again!

I spent 3 days here while working in San Francisco. I was gone too early to enjoy their wonderful breakfast, but they kindly put a box-breakfast together the night before for me. This place is very quaint and nice. In a first floor room, right off the street, it was too warm to leave the window closed, but it was a bit loud and exposed near the street when open, they need a fan or air-con on those first floor rooms. I have stayed here before and will again.
5 on July 21, 2012
I stayed at the Monte Cristo because my sister was having surgery at UCSF. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Wonderful breakfast, with treats available almost around the clock. Parking is a problem. They were working on the streets around the b&b and it was difficut to find parking, without getting a ticket. But definitely worth your money. Rooms very comfortable and quiet. Shuttle to UCSF is only 2 blocks away, very convenient. If you can't climb stairs, be sure to ask for a lower level room that was very accessible for my sister on crutches the night before her surgery. I want to go back when I can have fun.

The Monte Cristo is a unique property that is still undergoing renovation in some rooms. The completed rooms are beautifully decorated, period appropriate, and very comfortable. We stayed in the suite because there were three of us and the hide-a-bed in the sitting area was made up when we returned in the evening, along with a small refrigerator that we requested for medications.. The B&B is on a busy street which is not a problem because sound proofing has been added to the windows. The bathrooms were complete with all the latest technology in warming toilet seats that also wash and dry, warming towel racks, and rainfall shower heads. The breakfast began with buffet choices of fresh fruits, bakery items, and cereals, followed by your choice of entree breafast items. The quiche that I selected was delicious. The Monte Cristo is a perfect choice if you prefer unique accommodations rather than hotel cookie cutter rooms. I am anxious to visit when all renovations are completed.

We stayed at the Monte Cristo 12 nights last year and recently stayed there again for 3 nights, We were welcomed back by the warm and friendly staff. Great location; away from the downtown traffic but not too far away. Their breadfasts are spectacular. It's easy to pig out on their breakfast, and skip the next two meals if you wish. The rooms are a little small, but still well worth the price. And prices for rooms at the Monte Cristo are very reasonable for San Francisco. This B&B is a good deal and we look forward to a third stay next time we're in town.

We stayed in #9, while the room is not very large the bathroom sure makes up for it! WOW they have recently remodeled this one I believe and the extra touches are wonderful. The age of the building is part of it's charm and so are the owners. Jack and Carl are delightful. They go the extra mile to make sure your stay is comfortable and that you have everything you need including afternoon tea time, newspapers from around the world and plenty of Delicious selections of fresh fruit, juice and other breakfast items. The very nice woman who was serving breakfast had the attitude that if we didn't see it she could get it... there was nothing we could think of we needed. Thank you Monte Cristo! We will be back. (before booking I would check and see if they are done remodeling the upstairs though, they are in the midst of replacing some of the wood floors although they were not actually working on them while we were there)

Very quaint and warm feeling with a wonderful breakfast. However, parking was an issue for us. Only street parking is available and we were led to believe that there is "usually a spot". Not so, my husband had to drive about and parked 2 blocks away. I am unable to walk that distance and was very surprised that there wasn't a designated handicap spot anywhere in the vicinity. If you have a business like this, then a handicap parking spot should be readily available.

Our second stay at the Monte Cristo. We have enjoyed both stays very much. Very nice room (we've been in the same one both times) and a great breakfast. Convenient to public transportation. Walkable to Marina, Cow Hollow, Fillmore St. Had a car this time and didn't have a problem finding parking on the street.

Under construction, so the place was a bit of a mess. Found a pill (medication) on the floor when I checked into my room and the shower was tiny which was okay but the water changing temperature drastically to super-hot to super-cold was not okay. The place has amazing potential and I am sure the couple fixing it up will do a great job. Very nice people. Once the renovations are complete it will be stunning. Great service. Great food.

My husband and I have stayed twice at the Monte Cristo while visiting our daughter at USF. We love it. It is quiet, beautifully furnished, small, friendly and unusual. The rooms are not huge, but are very comfortable and the sheets and the bed were perfect. Breakfast is just right - lots of fruit, yogurt, granola and other healthy possibilities, and eggs if you want them. It's hard to find anyplace in San Francisco that one would call reasonably priced, but the Monte Cristo is very good value and very pleasant, in a neighborhood that has few other options. We'll be making it our regular stay!

My 2- day stay at the Monte Cristo Inn was a very pleasant one. I stayed at the Versailles room which was across the kitchen. Though there was noise in the mornings, it was not horrible- expect the same noise level you have at home. You can expect to hear some street noise like firetruck sirens so don't get this room or ones on the ground floor if want an uber quiet room to get some sleep. Breakfast was good.. You can ask Terry to whip you up some egg dishes for you. Definitely no ghostly activities! One thing I do wished was a hanger & stand where I can hang my clothes. There was a nice antique closet but was just an accessory. Other than that, it's great value for your money. I'd definitely stay at this place again especially if it's at a conference in UCSF (Laurel heights campus)!

My third stay there. The service and food/beverage provision were excellent. Had a very early plane at departure but was able to get breakfast at 4 in the morning! The room was a bit less desirable than ones I had been in before, with no desk space for a pc., though and an awkward wardrobe closet. The ambient temperature in the public spaces was a bit cool but the room was fine.

Very convenient to the wedding and reception I attended in the cute little neighborhod. Quiet, very comfortable, snug, lovely, clean and well-appointed room (downstairs facing street so not private). Good home-cooked breakfast. Thanks for the stay!

We have stayed at the Monte Cristo three times over the last two years and have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly and professional. If we need anything they are right there to help. The breakfast is the best ever for a continental style. They will even cook eggs if you would like. We will stay there again and again.

I was very pleased with our stay at Monte Cristo Bed & Breakfast! The ambiance is very charming and the staff is very friendly. I thought the location in the city where you find Monte Cristo is perfect as well. So yes, I would recommend Monte Cristo to anyone looking for a nice stay in SF !

Beautiful hidden gem is San Francisco. Jack and Carl couldn't have been any nicer! When you walk in, you feel as if you entered a time warp that led you to the the early 1900's. The furniture to the wall paper to the fixtures are beautiful. The wooden staircase that leads you upstairs creaks perfectly to lend to the ambience of the place. Our room " The Red Room # 12 " was cozy, comfy and inviting. My girlfriend and I will definitely be staying there again in the future.

If not only for the history of the B&B, but the location, makes this a great place to stay. The bathrooms were modernized, and the decor of the rooms quaint! It was easy to get to by public transport (which we took often, bus #1) and taxi. The area was peaceful and quiet for a good nights rest, away from the bustle of city noise of downtown and Union Square. We had made to order delicious breakfast, and wonderful customer service! I would give this place 5 stars! We enjoyed our stayed and I would recommend it to anyone!

I was looking for a place in San Fran and there was a conference that almost all of the hotels taken up. I had never stayed at a bed and breakfast before and was very reluctant. But this was in my price range and I took a chance. This place was beautiful and elegant. The beds were VERY comfortable. The shower was fabulous. (my two first requirements). there was free wifi and means to print my boarding pass for free. (Bonus). THe breakfast was ok, but i was rushed so i'm not sure i gave it a fair shake. The building is old and i could hear the person above me walking around...that was annoying, but not a deal breaker. I appreciated the flat screen tvs and there was heat in the rooms. All around, they not only met my hopes and expectations, they exceeded them. I'd definitely stay here again.

The Monte Cristo's building was erected around 1875 and was once a brothel. It's low-budget Victorian, with small rooms and narrow hallways. My room was the cheapest and also the smallest and darkest. It faced the street on the ground floor and was shuttered for privacy. But a bargain for San Francisco. The breakfast was good, with good orange juice and plenty of fresh fruit. I don't eat bacon so the quiche didn't tempt. The owners and staff are pleasant and professional.

Recently my parents came to visit me in San Francisco. Finding them a place to stay was a challenge. I live in a part of the city not convenient to Union Square, or the Financial District, where most of the city's hotels are. Plus, those parts of the city aren't my favorites and wouldn't be too interesting to my parents because they're geared FOR tourists and don't reflect so much the "real" San Francisco. So, if you discount Union Square and the Financial District your choices are far fewer. My parents weren't exactly on a budget, but since they were staying a week didn't want to spend $400/night on a grande olde hotel of San Francisco in Nob Hill. And they have very high standards, so some shabby place wouldn't do. We also thought it would be nice if they were not far from my neighborhood. So I researched and visited pretty much every BnB in the city that met our criteria. Monte Cristo was the tops. When my parents arrived they were warmly greeted and (being 82 years old) their bags were carried upstairs, which was much appreciated. They adored Jack and Carl, and appreciated the friendly professionalism of all the staff. My parents are from New England, and physically reserved, but I could tell, at the end of their stay, my mother ALMOST hugged Jack, tho she returned to her senses and extended her hand instead for a warm farewell handshake. Both parents raved about breakfast each day, especially the fresh fruit, and mentioned things like the poached eggs were done to perfection. They enjoyed their room, a California King with a brand new bath I'd particularly requested because I knew they'd love it, and slept well at night. Each morning my father would rise and take a walk in the neighborhood, which he enjoyed, and both of them appreciated they were able to get a feel of what it's actually like to live in San Francisco, rather than perch on top of it, like a tourist. They will most definitely return to the Monte Cristo.

We were pleasantly surprised with this charming bed and breakfast and had a wonderful stay. The Laurel heights neighborhood is close to great shops and the buses are close by for transportation. Jack was a wonderful help with everything we needed and the ladies who made and served breakfast were outstanding. Our queen room was roomy enough and the bathroom a good size, but there could be more shelf space for toiletries in the bathroom. We really loved the homey atmosphere downstairs, which gave us a place to relax in the afternoon and early evenings. We will be back!

Atmospheric, tranquil and charming retreat, but conveniently located on the busline. Easy location to navigate. Within walking distance to food and libation. Charming older Victorian. Our room was comfortable- big, beautiful, cozy bed. This is a beautiful bed and breakfast, built in 1875. It has so much history and charm. The proprietors are helpful and friendly and breakfast was fabulous. There is a water cooler for the guests and coffe and tea and cookies in the afternoons. There is even a computer with a printer you can use to print boarding passes! The place is close to a cable car stop but we had a rental car. It can take a few minutes to find parking for the evening. They also provide a map and a list of good restaurants nearby. I would recommend this place to anyone!

I was traveling alone, and wanted to capture the flavor of San Francisco and its history. The Monte Cristo is charming and beautifully furnished, with an old world touch but modern conveniences. Jack, the owner, was incredibly helpful in figuring out how to use the transit system which was important to me. The dining room hostess had a lovely personality and was fun to talk to. The food at breakfast was generous and delicious, and featured unusual food items that were fresh and wonderful. I would definitely come back to stay and recommend both the Monte Cristo and the surrounding Presidio neighborhood very highly!

We loved it (even saw a hummingbird outside our window). Met many friendly guests. But the management is what struck me as truly extraordinary. We had to leave early due to a hurricane-related flight cancellation. The location was great as we planned activities at the Presidio. The inkeepers were very friendly and helpful. However, Room 3 was very stuffy, hot,no fan. We did not sleep well. Towels had a strong chlorine scent. Our first breakfast was excellent. The second day our poor server was harried, everyone must have come down to eat at once and she could not keep up. The price was reasonable for SF. Just make sure you get a different room!

Quite sincerely, this B&B is the best lodgings I've ever had. The quality of the design, the soft soothing atmosphere, the comfortable, private rooms with every amenity - I hope Jack and Carl keep this standard for always. They are very accomodating, and take every pain to ensure comfort. The room we had came with a plasma tv on the wall, plenty of furniture for comfort, and a design that really made us feel at home. Breakfast in the morning was a delightful assortment of fresh fruit, dried fruit, pastries and scones, granola cereal, and fresh juices. It was nice to have a healthy breakfast for a change. The location is great too; it's near everything you could want to see in the downtown area, the presidio, or the parks. Again, cannot recommend this B&B enough!

Enjoyed our stay at Monte Cristo. Jack made sure to go above and beyond for any travel advice that we had. He was helpful in his suggestions to restaurants and sights to see! For breakfast, we were waited on hand and foot. The two quiche that were prepared were fantastic! The B&B has an older look and feel, but with that, it had tons of character and enhancements that didn't take away from the stay. Best tv channel selection that we've seen to date! Would gladly stay again.

I can highly recommend staying at the Monte Cristo. The rooms are all charming and the building has a colorful past. Very clean and very quiet. The breakfast is top-notch, including a choice of hot dishes (quiches, eggs, etc.) as well as buffet of fresh fruits and pastries. Concierge availability is limited in the evening, and I would have appreciated warning about street cleaning (my rental car was ticketed). Number of rooms with bathtubs is small. A bit pricey, but so is all of San Francisco.

We came to Sf to visit my son & family. My daughter-in-law was told the cost would be a certain amount for a "neighborhood rate" The internet said a different amount. After a AAA discount our one night stay was yet another amount. We had hoped to have a reasonable priced place to stay on a regular basis. We enjoyed eberything about your place, but can't use it as often as we had hoped. We will return. V&R from Sacramento

We would definitely stay there again.

My extended family stayed here for my daughter's graduation from USF. The B&B could not have been more perfect. The rooms are quaint, and the breakfast was very good. It is a perfect place for a large group -- it was a though we were staying at our own 18th century house.

What turned me on to this B&B was not only its proximity to the deYoung Museum but it's antiquary turn-of-the-century appeal. Although my girlfriend was afraid of it being haunted, the most I found underneath the bed were a few dust balls covering the hardwood floor. There were a few other cosmetic attributes that caught my attention but what do you expect from someone who works in the contracting industry and has a knack for antique architecture? Other than that, the service and food were great, the bed was incredibly comfortable and so was the price. Thank you Monte Carlo for a memorable stay.

The breakfast was good. Fresh fruit, bagels, eggs etc. We liked that they had tea, coffee and snacks available all day and in the evening. We liked our room which had it's own bathroom. Top rate all the way. If you are looking for a more quiet, relaxed, personal experience other than the business hotel chains down around the square, then this is the place. No parking fee either!. If you aren't use to the city then if you arrive a night its dark in the area and Presido is not a main street so you have to look hard to find it. It's a safe upscale area and Calfornia street has a number of places to dine only blocks away. The owners did a first class upgrade to the rooms and bathrooms, so they are very clean. My mattress was also top grade, the kind that melts around you when press your tired body down upon it. The breakfast can be made to order and the hostess/cook was very nice and I even stood and spoke to her in the kitchen as she cooked; it looks like a fun kitchen to cook in... maybe next time they might let me :)

Feel at home the minute you walk in and speak to Jack, one of the owners. He smiles and makes you feel like you've been there before. We spent 4 nights there and enjoyed the authentic feel to the beautifully decorated rooms and charming dining/sitting rooms. Everyone who works there seems handpicked for their friendliness and attention to detail. The stairs creak as you ascend them, seemingly happy to welcome you back. The rooms are cosy and airy and beautifully decorated, without losing turn-of-the-century appeal. The breakfasts are delicious, with far more selection than anticipated. The B&B is across the street from 2 bus routes and is central to tourist areas of San Francisco. I would definitely not only stay there again, but recommend the Monte Cristo to any and all.

The staff at a nearby boutique hotel were kind enough to direct me to the Monte Cristo when they had no rooms available. Thanks! This was a pleasant surprise. Staff at MC were attentive and courteous. Breakfast was made available much earlier than the stated 7:30 am and was fresh and tasty. Room was quaint and had a nice view of a neighboring garden and downtown. I would readily stay here again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Very convenient location, with attractive, well-appointed rooms. But what really distinguishes Monte Cristo is the friendly, thoughtful service: afternoon tea or coffee upon arrival, computer station to print out airline departure boarding passes, delicious and extensive breakfast, including fresh fruit and freshly-baked cranberry bread. Breakfast hostess Brianna couldn't have been more pleasant. We will definitely return.

Fine place. My only 2 critiques are 1.) heat controls are out in the hallway, not room specific. It appeared that someone preferred it to be set in the low 60 degree range. 2.) Towels and pillowcases had been laundered with detergents with fragrance, or else dryer static thingees, leaving the scent that causes headaches for chem-sensitive folks. Mgt., please switch to fragrance-free detergents. Thanks.

Really liked the room. It was very quiet. Usually when I stay at a hotel or bed and breakfast I don't get a good night's sleep but I did at your place.

We loved our stay at the Monte Cristo. The room was lovely, the breakfasts and afternoon refreshments excellent, but what is really exceptional is the helpfulness and hospitality they show to every guest. The Monte Cristo offers all the charm and intimacy of a B&B without sacrificing the amenities and services provided at a larger establishment. Thanks for everything!

Having studied art history in college I was thrilled to stay in a building that survived the great earthquake just after the turn of the century! I plan to visit you again, thank you! Jane Hldebrand bakersfield, CA

I had a great stay for what I paid. Comfortable and large rooms with an old world feel. Bathrooms are updated with a very modern sink and and walk-in shower. Public transportation literally at your front door and minutes away from most of San Francisco's attractions.

the staff and accommodations were great! the food was exceptionally good - not elaborate, but fresh and expertly prepared. Delicious bleu cheese quiche and perfectly cooked scrambled eggs.

I spend about a week in San Fran every other month and I have had the pleasure of staying at the Monte Cristo twice. Each time I have been welcomed and treated as a family member. The rooms are very nice and exceptionally clean. The made to order breakfast is amazing and the attention to details is remarkable. I am a raving fan!

This is an elegant little place in a cute neighborhood. Unlike most B&B's, they have some food available even at night (bananas and sometimes chocolate). My only complaint is that sometimes the heat could have been on a bit higher.

We enjoyed our recent overnight stay at the Monte Cristo! Room #11 was comfortable, cozy and clean. The hotel staff was friendly and the next morning served us a nice, hot breakfast. As we dined we enjoyed the nostalgic jazz music which added to the ambiance of the Monte Cristo. We will definitely be back for another visit!

We stayed at the Monte Cristo from Dec 22 thru Dec 28. We enjoyed the breakfast and the friendly hospitality. The bed's were old and very noisy though.

We stayed one night at Monte Cristo, picking this B&B because of its proximity to a concert venue. We were greeted warmly and upgraded to a King room. The room was small, but adequate and clean. The bath quite spare, but also clean. Breakfast was excellent and exceeded our expectations.

Nice room, remodeled updated yet still authentic bed and breakfast. Lovely place to stay. Breakfast was outstanding.

This B&B is located far enough from downtown to be quiet and close enough that it's accessible by walk or short cab ride. The room (Broderick) was a great size for two. Breakfast in the mornings was great and the staff was exceedingly friendly.

All major hotels were booked in The City due to a huge convention so my American Express travel agent suggested the Monte Cristo. It's a quaint 18-room hotel with charming accommodations and great breakfasts! Easy walking distance to wonderful restaurants, art galleries, shopping. I felt safe and right at home--coming to breakfast in one's jammies is encouraged! Great stay, I'll do it again!

My cousin and I did a mini family reunion in the city. The Monte Cristo is in a great location. Easy walking to fun shops and great restaurants. Breakfast was yummy. We spent time in the sitting room. A very comfortable place and our host was gracious

I stayed at Monte Cristo in late November 2010 and I couldn't wish for a more welcoming and comfortable stay. Jack is a legend and knows San Francisco like he back of his hand, so any questions guests have are taken care of. Staff members Terri and Briony (I hope I spelt their names right) were just wonderful too. The breakfasts are magnificent, rooms perfect and the B&B is in a nice area. In all, a brilliant place to stay!!

The Innkeepers were very helpful and accommodating. The breakfast was excellent. The soundproofing was insufficient, and had the Inn been busy, it would have been a problem. Fortunately there were few guests, and everyone seemed sensitive to the problem. Otherwise, I would give the Monte Cristo an unqualified recommendation.

Staff was always extremely pleasant and helpful! The breakfast was incredible! An offering of eggs or a signature blue Cheese and Bacon Quiche besides all the fresh fruit and the normal pastries and cereals.

Enjoyed our stay here (good value, great breakfast), but DO NOT stay in room #7. Aside from the two single beds in the room (seriously?), the next-door bathroom was separated from our room by a paper-thin door (which previously connected to the bathroom), that allowed us to hear EVERYTHING that was going on in our neighbor's bathroom. NOTE TO OWNERS: replace the two single beds with one double, and soundproof that bathroom!!!! It led to a very unpleasant experience.

superb beds; super food (breakfast); lovely people. Phone recording and website seem too impersonal - could be warmer and more accessible in tone. What Jack has done there in a short time is amazing, and we'll bet our next time will be even better.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Monte Cristo, when we went to SF to see our college student daughter. The room was lovely, if small, the bed was very comfortable, the proprietors were very friendly and helpful and breakfast was very nice. The Monte Cristo has a wonderful old San Francisco atmosphere, and we loved it.

Really nice B&B, run by really nice people - when our taxi to get back to the airport for our departure failed to arrive they couldn't have been more helpful. Everything was just great - we really enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend this place to anyone.

Great B&B. Excellent service and breakfast. I have one complaint: the water pressure is incredibly lousy... water literally drips at a snail's pace from the shower head. So, if you get assigned room #5, you might request an alternate room. Besides this one complaint, everything else was fantastic. Oh, parking's a pain, but you're in SF, so what're you gonna do?

My wife and I spent four days in SF for our 30th anniversary and stayed at the Monte Cristo. The place is old, and the age shows, but it is clean and well maintained, and the furnishings were very comfortable. Breakfast each day was delicious (fresh fruits, variety of pastries, various quiches, cereals, trail mix -- something for most everybody). It's about three miles from downtown, but we were able to get everywhere easily on the city buses (two bucks, with very generous transfer policies -- the 1 California line is a block from the door, and you can take that directly to Chinatown and Embarcadero; one transfer to the Golden Gate or to Fisherman's Warf) and there are a lot of fun, funky neighborhood destinations within walking distance. (A note on the walking - they aren't kidding about the hills. OK, we're from Illinois, where there's maybe a 30 foot change in elevation for the entire freakin' state, but some of the inclines had me wishing for a bottle of O2.)

Extremely comfortable bed; it was like staying at a friend's house - there was always coffee and tea available and fruit and a plate of cake or cookies .. anytime I passed the dining area! and having computer access was unexpected and extremely helpful when a family emergency arose. The house is old, but the owners have made necessary improvements without changing the character of the place ... absolutely loved it (only wish it was closer in to the downtown area so I could visit more often).

We stayed on a Friday night and found a parking space right across the street. This was important because some hotel charge up to $25 a night for parking. The breakfast was wonderful and filling. The bed and bedding was excellent. However, we stayed in the cheapest room there and it was too small, no place to sit except on the bed. Otherwise, the Monte Cristo was a great place to stay. Myra

Staff and owners were friendly and attentive. The morning breakfasts were great with variety and quality, dining room was a charming environment to visit others and sit and enjoy your meal. Room didn't feel so clean, there was peeling plaster on the ceiling in a couple of places. The bathroom had a poor paint job with dripping paint onto the moulding looked grotty, and cheap linoleum floors didn't seem clean. Biggest problem was that our bathroom was only separated by only a thin door from the twin bed room next door. When sitting on the toilet you could hear every word of their conversations, and they would be able to hear every noise you made on the toilet. As well, doors/walls are not very sound proof, so the noise of people in the hallway was quite loud, especially if they got in late. You are close to the Fillmore district, so the area is pretty good, but I try a different place next time we are in SF.

We have 2 teenagers and wanted a night away from home to celebrate our 18th anniversary. Living in the south bay, we always look to the city for our nights away. Carl greeted us and removed the feather bedding cause of an allergy. We changed for dinner and had used the dining portion of the website to chose a restaurant. The Inn was clean, furnishings are beautiful and comfortable. The breakfast was lots of fruit, granola, breads, orange juice and Peets coffee. We enjoyed the night away and will be back. We asked to see if they had any soy milk and they did :)

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights over Labor Day weekend. We reserved the Maximillian suite. It was spacious and nicely appointed. The bathroom was a tad small, but understandable considering the age of this gorgeous building. Parking was a bit of a trick. I highly recommend staying here as it is cozy, warm and inviting. The two gentlemen running the B&B are very nice and welcoming as well. I would definitley stay here again and have convinced my parents to stay here as well.

This was an amazing trip. We stayed 3 nights at the Monte Cristo. This is a very reasonable place to stay and the value of service from the B&B surpassed all expectations. Bedrooms were a comfortable size & the bed was very comfy. The bathrooms were nicely remodeled as well. Parking was free across the street from the b&b. Parking is best past Pine Avenue where it converts to Masonic. Each side is day & night parking, the only thing you need to make sure is that you move your car for the street cleaner on either Wednesday or Thursday. It was also easily connected to public transportation. Two major lines pass right in front. No worries about noise, though, they have great sound barriers & great blackout blinds & curtains for restful nights. Terry was AMAZING! She had great stories & willing to accommodate us in anyway to make sure we were satisfied w/ our breakfast & our journey through the city. I HIGHLY recommend this B&B to anyone. My hubby & I will definitely be back VERY SOON! Leaving the heat from Vegas to lovely fresh Monte Cristo B&B is a definite repeat for us!

We visit our son and his girlfriend as often as possible and just found this wonderful B & B. They recently moved in to a new apt a block away, so mix convenience and the charm and comfort of this magnificent place, we can't wait to return! Jack and Carl are both very accommodating hosts, the food was excellent, the room including the bed was so comfy. We have definitely found our "home away from home" when visiting the San Francisco area!

The innkeeper was always helpful, and friendly. The room was clean, charmingly furnished with antiques, and an exceptionally comfortable bed. For a B&B located in the heart of San Francisco, the value was exceptional. The only drawback was the thin walls which permitted me to overhear my neighbor's conversations with unusual clarity. Still, I would recommend this inn highly, and would not hesitate to stay there again.

My first visit to S.F in years. 2 of us going, a friend visiting her daughter at USF for parent' weekend. Conveniently located to campus, lovely converted Victorian home with period furnishings, comfortable beds, friendly staff, healthy local fare for breakfast, and even freshly baked cookies!

The decoration and ambiance is wonderful! Historic building with modern amenities. The silk wallpaper in the breakfast room is gorgeous and the wallpaper in the rooms has a beautiful design too. Free computer to use and available wifi (I didn't have my laptop with me though). The beds were very comfortable (I have a back problem so this was really important). The staff was so nice, helpful, and kind, and breakfast was delicious! I will stay here again. Public transport was easy to use and close to the B&B. Trader Joe's is also nearby. My friend and I stayed in room 5 and it was so quiet and peaceful!

The Monte Cristo is a quirky place, with some unusual room characteristics. The innkeepers do a great job with the breakfast and service, so it's a very good value for someone who is spending time in San Francisco.

If you don't mind a non-standard hotel room/spartan accomodations, this place is great. Good location, a block from the thoroughfare so not noisy. No complaints really. The bed we got was not terribly comfortable, but it was passable, and the door lock needed some fiddling, but worked. Other than that, great value for being in the middle of the city.
The Monte Cristo is now under new management, and we have just installed new Simmons beds. And for the first time in the history of the hotel, we have Wifi :-) The hotel was built in 1875 and it still has many of the original mortise locksets.
