Casa 579 is located in Santa Teresa which is a unique historic part of Rio. With its cobbled streets, colonial mansions and the old fashioned ‘Bonde’ tram, it appears to have stopped in time. It has a fantastic mix of architecture and lots of lush vegetation. With museums, great restaurants and local bars full of character, atmosphere and plenty of live music, it is also just minutes from the city centre and Lapa, the famous Rio nightlife hotspot. The home of artists, writers and creative types since as long ago as the 19th century, it was also home to many Rio luminaries, including the men behind the first railway in Brazil and the Christ the Redeemer statue itself. It is also less segregated than other parts of Rio, with rich and poor living in closer proximity and more harmoniously than other areas of Rio. Nowadays, Santa Teresa is Brazil’s first environmentally protected urban area. It is also a designated sustainable tourism area, with tourism activities focused upon preserving the beautiful natural and historical environment and promoting socio-economic equality. The Yellow ‘Bonde’ (Tram) that runs between Santa Teresa and the city centre, originally horse drawn in the 19th Century, is now the only remaining tram network in South America, and still an integral mode of transport for the local community. Casa 579 is easily reached from both Lapa, the hub of Rio's Samba clubs and Bars and Largo do Machado.

This was our first time in Rio and I have to say I was a little bit apprehensive after what people had told me about the city...I shouldn't have worried at all. When we got to Casa 579 we were made to feel so welcome and at ease. Nothing was too much trouble and the staff were very knowledgeable and got us to grips with getting around on local transport and where to go out for some great meals (Gauchos and Espirito Santa were our favourites) and some amazing nightlife and samba music in Lapa. Casa 579 is a beautiful house with unbelievable views and having a great breakfast looking out onto the gardens and having a family of monkeys and a toucan pop by was a big highlight of our trip! We absolutely loved the area, it feels like you are seeing the part of Rio where the Brazilians live not just the tourists come to visit and staying at Casa 579 made our trip to Rio so a BIG thanks to everyone at Casa 579!

Casa 579 is quite simply amazing, the views are fantastic (the view from the roof terrace is the best I have seen in any place we have stayed in South America so far), the place is like a private mansion house, beautifully decorated and the breakfasts are great! The staff there go out of the way to help you and are incredibly well informed and know all there is to know about Rio (or at least all we needed to know anyway). Would definitely recommend staying here!
