Château de Sédaiges

– Marmanhac, France

A military site from the 12th century onward, the Sédaiges castle was in the middle of the Franco - English conflicts that raged in medieval Auvergne. Rebuilt as a fortress in the 15th century and extensively decorated in the 18th, this impressive chateau is also a unique example of the Troubadour architecture of the 19th century. The same family has always lived there, enabling it to maintain an outstanding level of interior decoration. Visitors can relive scenes of XIXth century every day life in its superb private rooms : against a dazzling backdrop of wooden panelling and tapestries listed as national treasures, the period costumes and figures, antique games and ceremonial china, bring back all the charm of a time gone by.

"The ideal base from which to visit the Loire"

"We stayed at Le Clos Rabelais for 6 nights and Shaun made us as welcome on the last day as on the first. This is a great base from which to see the sights of the Loire valley and surrounding area, and we were surprised that many guests only stayed one night on their way through. The major road network is very accessible but there are lots of country lanes as well, and so little traffic! It was great to be able to bring in bread and pate (and wine) for light meals - many B&Bs don't provide so much as a plate for your own food. We especially liked the dogs and the kiwi fruit growing on the vine. We will certainly be staying at Le Clos Rabelais if we are visiting the area again."
