House on Cherry Street, Jacksonville, FL: Spend the weekend with an expert gardener innkeeper. Instruction in vermiculture, composting, making herbal tea, and French intensive gardening in raised beds is offered free when you stay two nights; just bring your gardening gloves. Rates are $105-$115 nightly.
Island Goode's, Hilo, HI: Stay two nights through July, and the innkeeper will offer a personalized tour of the eight-acre sugar cane fields along with a demonstration on harvesting and processing sugar cane juice. Additionally, $25 will be deducted from a two-night stay to purchase tickets to the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens, just two miles from the B&B. Rates are $180-$215 nightly.
Annabelle B&B, Sandwich, MA: Book any suite for a three-night stay from May 15 - October 15, and receive a two-hour consultation from horticulturist/innkeeper Paula Murphy plus two complimentary tickets to Heritage Gardens & Museums in Sandwich. Topics range from proper planting and pruning techniques to design ideas; tour this B&B's gardens with more than 300 species of plants. Rates are $155-$205 nightly.
Yates House, Rocheport, MO: Come June 6-8, 2008, for a weekend of planting and partying. The weekend starts with a private tour of Vintage Hill Nursery and Farm, featuring over 1,700 varieties of annuals, perennials, hardy roses, and a fantastic selection of pottery. With the guidance of owner Jeff Oberhaus, purchase plants for your container garden. Then return to the inn for a luncheon and demonstration on using herbs in recipes. Enjoy quaint Rocheport in the afternoon, and then return to the inn for a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception with other attendees and the innkeepers. Jeff Oberhaus will join the group to discuss the art of container gardening and assist attendees in creating their own container garden masterpieces. This package costs $100 when added to the cost of a two-night stay. Rates range from $149-$269 nightly.
Cranmore Mountain Lodge, North Conway, NH: The 2008 Fryeburg Home, Garden and Flower show is located just 15 minutes from the inn. Browse the "Garden Marketplaces," offering everything for your garden and landscaping needs from seedlings to patio dining tables. This package is offered May 16-18, and includes two nights at a discounted rate starting at $124 per night for standard rooms plus two complimentary tickets to the show. Children under 10 stay free with a parent, and children under six can attend the show without a ticket.
Main Street Manor, Flemington, NJ: If you're looking for inspiration for your garden, start in the parlor where guests find volumes of garden design books. Next, visit Doris Duke's renowned estate, Duke Farms, where 11 themed gardens are housed in an elegant turn-of-the-century glass conservatory. The Garden Inspiration Package includes two nights' accommodations plus two tickets to Duke Farms from $240-$505, depending on room choice and dates.
Maxwell House B&B, Mount Airy, NC: The innkeeper here is a professed "black thumb" and is hoping guests will help plant the gardens. From now until June 15, bring a hardy outdoor plant or a dozen iris bulbs, then clear your own space in the garden and plant them. In exchange, if you come on a weekend, you'll pay the standard rate for the first night and receive the second at half price. Come bearing plants midweek, and receive the second night free. Rates are $125-$165.
