A VIEW FROM THE LOO

In the zone on the throne and other "over the top" bathrooms from BedandBreakfast.com

Inn at Montford, Asheville, NC

Austin, TX - According to an article in USA TODAY (10/2/06) "As hotels spend billions on 21st-century upgrades:the money is going for things such as better beds, splashier showers, trendier bars and flat-screen TVs." Let's face it; hotels are following the trail blazed by B&Bs. Once infamous for requiring guests to share a bath, many of today's inns pamper their guests with palatial bathrooms sporting everything from "vertical Jacuzzis" with multi-jet showers to toilets with the best view in the house. "Savvy inngoers expect luxurious surroundings beyond the bedroom," explained Sandy Soule, Editor of BedandBreakfast.com and 20-year B&B guidebook and website author. "Our industry has long been on the cutting edge of pampering hospitality, a trend that leaves hotels playing catch-up with B&Bs." BedandBreakfast.com offers the following compendium of loos with a view and other bathrooms offering distinctive themes or exquisite amenities.

Luna Vista B&B , Rimrock, AZ: The Don Diego Suite features a luxury marble bath with everything from a 12-foot lighted vanity and sink to a walk-in multi-jet shower and steam bath. Guests love the private water closet and bidet room along with the plush robes and pampering amenities.

Inn at Locke House, Lockford, CA: Tree tops, distant Sierra foothills crowned with snow or misty in fog, ripening persimmons, golden fremantia and pines are among the views from any of the private guest bathrooms at this inn located at the gateway to the Sierra Foothills. Gaze out the large windows while soaking in antique clawfoot tubs or refreshing in the large showers found in guest baths.

Circle S Ranch, Lawrence, KS: This B&B maintains the cowboy theme right down to the guest baths. Stand in the Cowboy Room private bathroom, and the corrugated tin shower offers fixtures true to theme, right down to water coming from an over tipped bucket.

1870 Banana Courtyard French Quarter B&B, New Orleans, LA: Fluttering in the wind seems to happen naturally in the Gone with the Wind bathroom attached to the Hexagon Room. This oversized ensuite bathroom features a wardrobe trunk used for costume storage in the filming of Gone with the Wind, a clawfoot bathtub with a shower and an antique sink encased in an Art Deco cabinet, plus plenty of Gone with the Wind artwork and memorabilia. Draw a bubble bath, kick back and become a pampered "Miss Scarlet."

Belfry Inn & Bistro, Sandwich, MA: Built into a renovated church, baths in this inn feature everything from stained glass windows to ultra-massage whirlpool tubs built into the former bell tower. Take in views of the town and beyond from these baths.

Chez Sven Bed & Breakfast, Wellfleet, MA: A visit to the Seagull Cottage will include a mandatory tour of the newly renovated bath featuring Mexican tiles, a large soaking tub, and views of chickadees eating at the feeders and the woods beyond.

Inn at Norwood, Sykesville, MD: The view from the Loft Room's double spa tub overlooks the entire 900-square-foot suite, including a three-sided gas fireplace. Pop in a movie, and watch while soaking in the Jacuzzi. While seldom used for its name, there's an elegant fainting couch alongside the tub too.

Inn at Southwest, Southwest Harbor, ME: Sit on the throne in the private bath of the Egg Rock Room, and you'll be treated to the best view in the house. The vista from this second floor toilet looks out over bucolic Southwest Harbor, filled with fishing and lobster boats.

Prairieside Suites, Luxury B&B, Granville, MI: No details were spared in guestroom baths created by owners who combine talents as interior designer and licensed builder. No need to worry about the cold Michigan winters; guests find heat everywhere from the towel bars and floors right down to the toilet seats and mirrors. Additionally, European jetted showers plus luxury soaps help to create a "wow" factor to this B&B's baths.

Rockcliffe Mansion, Hannibal, MO: This 13,000-square-foot mansion was built around the original owner's wish for a view of the Mississippi River from his bathroom. The balcony off this bathroom faces a fabulous view of the Mississippi River and Lover's Leap, above which the original owner of this mansion is buried so he could look back at his home.

The Guest Haus B&B Cottage, Washington, MO: The private bath here features an enormous bathroom with a shower big enough for seven, although parties are not encouraged! Add His and Her (yes, two!) clawfoot tubs and vanities, and it's no wonder guests spend more time in the loo than in the bedroom.

The Spencer Hotel, Chautauqua, NY: Soak in the whirlpool tub in the Jane Austin Room, and view a castle plus adorable sheep in the fields. In the Arabian Nights room, a genie and purple elephants are the view in the loo. This literary-themed boutique hotel is highlighted by hand-painted murals, offering a different view of the world from each private bath. For those who seek a real view from the loo, take a peek through the window surrounded by a painted hedge in the Browning Suite, and you'll see Lake Chautauqua beyond.

1900 Inn on Montford, Asheville, NC: The luxurious marble bathroom is the centerpiece of Zelda's Retreat. Sit in the double whirlpool, and enjoy the fireplace, a TV or a view of the wooded yard from the windows above. If you grow tired of being horizontal, move to the deluxe steam room and multi-jet two-person shower with seven shower heads.

The Castle on Silver Lake, Ocracoke, NC: The Lighthouse Suite on the third floor of this historic Ocracoke Island building was named for the incredible view of the Ocracoke Lighthouse from the shower. In fact, owners claim that the Lighthouse Suite bath offers the best view of the lighthouse from any bathroom on the island.

Iris Meadows B&B, Waynesville, NC: The large private bath in the Garden View room features a whirlpool tub for two, overlooking lush gardens. This bath also has a chandelier with an adjustable dimming switch, a separate rainforest shower and steam bath with beautiful tiled artwork, plus a gas fireplace. Many a guest has claimed to spend more time in this bathroom than in the bedroom.

Inn at Bowman's Hill, New Hope, PA: Stay in the Pond Vista room and you're treated to heated towel racks, Italian tile, double whirlpools and a view over a field to the back of the estate. Be sure to check at dawn and dusk to view deer and other wildlife from the bathroom here.

Biscuit Hill B&B, Canyon Lake, TX: Stay In the Creekside Suite and there are two choices for bathing. The inside option features a custom-tiled two-person shower with a rain shower head and colored water feature. The outside option includes a completely enclosed private hot tub and outdoor shower grotto for bathing "au natural." Other guest baths also feature large showers with multiple shower heads and seats plus walls of mirrors over two-person sinks.

Inn above Onion Creek, Kyle, TX: Each suite at this Hill Country inn comes with a palatial bath, complete with glass-tiled showers and separate water closets. The sunset view from the Porter Suite potty is memorable, but the Tolson Suite's view of spiraling scissortails grazing cattle, or the occasional lightning storm passing through the area is a guest favorite. In the Captain Fergus Kyle Room, open the French doors from the bath and take in a peaceful Hill Country view from a bath with enough room for line dancing.

Four Columns Inn, Newfane, VT: Select Suite Four for the best loo view from its massive Federal-style windows; you can see this quintessential New England town and the Green Mountains beyond, while enjoying the warmth of the crackling fireplace, the two-person spa tub and the marble shower with its 12-head all-body massage spray.

Woodstocker Inn, Woodstock, VT: New to innkeeping, the owners of this inn totally retrofitted every guest room, placing a priority on bathrooms designed for lingering. Each bath features a different feature, from his and her claw foot tubs (yes, two in one bathroom) made for those who prefer different water temperatures, to showers with body sprays and rainforest shower heads. All baths have radiant floor heating and are ecologically friendly with environmental AC units, low flush toilets, and cotton shower curtains.

Ravenwood Lodge for Two, Run of the River Lodge & Refuge, Leavenworth, WA: Monty and Karen Turner spared nothing in making this luxury cabin a haven for those seeking pampered surroundings, including the movable "nanowall" and a bathroom with a "show stopper" view from the shower of the Cascade Mountains.

Cascadas de Merida Bed and Breakfast, Yucatan, Mexico: Four private casitas now stand where a thatched roof house was originally built a century ago. Six generations of Wilberth Basto's family occupied the house that is now the B&B. Growing up without indoor plumbing, Wilberth wanted his B&B to have amazing bathrooms. Private three-tiered waterfalls surround each glass enclosed shower. Mayan in ambiance and tranquil in effect, rates are only $80 per night, including poolside refreshments and breakfast for two.
