PLANES, TRAINS BUT NO AUTOMOBILES - CAR-FREE MEANS CAREFREE

BedandBreakfast.com says don't be careless, go car-less this summer

Austin, TX - Between rising gas prices and a desire for greener travel, Americans are finding renewed interest in car-less getaways. BedandBreakfast.com comes to the rescue with a comprehensive list of car-free getaways. "This summer, travelers can care less about rising gas prices by going car-less to B&Bs," says Sandy Soule, Editor of BedandBreakfast.com and frequent inngoer. All B&Bs and inns listed can be accessed by public transportation; some reward guests with special incentives for choosing greener travel options. Listed alphabetically by state, read on for descriptions of great getaways using foot and pedal power.

Martine Inn, Pacific Grove, CA: Fly into the Monterey Peninsula Airport, catch the Monterey-Salinas Transit bus and get off two blocks from the inn, located on Monterey Bay. A 22-mile walking path is steps from the door, and the famed Aquarium and Cannery Row are within a five-minute walk. Monterey's entire splendor is easily accessed on foot, by rollerblades or by bike.

August Seven Inn, Daytona Beach, FL: Located just five miles from the airport, the inn provides complimentary transportation to those staying two or more nights. Famous Daytona Beach is an easy four-minute walk. Access shops, farmers markets and restaurants on foot, or take public transportation right from the inn to downtown malls, mini-golf and other attractions.

Scarborough Fair B&B, Baltimore, MD: Take Amtrak, the Marc Train, or fly into BWI, and the Light Train will bring you within 12 blocks of this inn, located in the historic Federal Hill neighborhood, an easy walk to the Inner Harbor and the Oriole's Camden Yards stadium. If your feet tire, walk two blocks and rent a Segway, the newest craze in green transport, or use pedal power to explore the harbor by swan boat.

Morrison House B&B, Somerville, MA: Simply take the Silver Line from Boston's Logan Airport or Amtrak to South Station, connect to the Red Line, get off at Davis Square, and you're a two- minute walk to this B&B. Stroll the tree-lined Minuteman Trail or take the T to all of Boston's fabulous city sights and sounds. Davis Square's bookstores, restaurants and nightlife are right out the door.

Lathrop House B&B, Springfield, MA: Car service is offered from nearby Bradley International Airport, Amtrak, and Peter Pan bus stations. Once here, bus service right outside the door will take guests to the Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden, Basketball Hall of Fame, museums, restaurants, and more. Right across the street is 765-acre Forest Park, with 16 tennis courts, nature trails, duck ponds, Japanese and formal rose gardens, and even bocce courts.

Captain Wohlt Inn, Hermann, MO: This complex of four buildings, all on the Historic Registry, rewards visitors who arrive by Amtrak from St. Louis or Kansas City. Come by train and receive a 10 percent discount for one-night stays, then add a 15 percent discount for the second night and a 20 percent discount for the third night's stay. Walk to museums, wineries, antique and gift shops, microbreweries, restaurants and more. Rent bikes and receive complimentary shuttle service to the Katy Trail for scenic biking.

Serendipity B&B, Independence, MO: From the Kansas City Airport, catch the shuttle into downtown KC, then transfer to the bus to Independence. The B&B is just a half block from the bus stop and four blocks from the Amtrak station. Visit the former Truman home and the Truman Library or enjoy quaint shops, restaurants and more. A historic walking trail through town makes seeing the sites on foot fun and easy, and bus service makes downtown Kansas City easily accessible.

The Guest Haus, Washington, MO: Take Amtrak to the 1926 historic Union Pacific Station in Washington and walk four easy blocks to this self-contained B&B. Guests have exclusive use of the two-bedroom house, with a full kitchen and living room, so bring the whole family or a group of friends. Antique and gift shoppers will find 10 treasure troves within five blocks, along with museums, a general store and galleries.

Walk to onsite recreation including indoor and outdoor pools, tennis, golf, spa, exercise and game room, playground, horseshoes and much more.
