Crater Rim Cabin on a sunny March afternoon. The white areas on the roof are skylights which allow nice soft light to flow into the cabin.Lush rainforest filled with ferns and the native ohia trees. This photo was found about 2 miles from our cabin.
The koa trees make interesting shadows on the back lawn.I recently discovered that dahlias do very well here in Volcano, so I've planted about 30 varieties. We shall see how much of the year I can keep them blooming! It's now October and they're still going!
Our backyard on a warm afternoon. Golden morning at Kilauea Caldera.View from Crater Rim Trail.
Recent activity at Halemaumau Crater produces a spectacular gas plume. This scene is less than 2 miles from Crater Rim Cabin.Aerial view of the active vent inside Halema‘uma‘u Crater at the summit of Kilauea Volcano. As the crow flies, this is about 2 miles from Crater Rim Cabin.
Lava still flows into the ocean from the Pu‘u ‘O‘o vent on the slope above. An evening drive of about 40 miles from Crater Rim Cabin will take you to the present entry point. The flow changes every day and can be quite spectacular!Just a 22 mile drive down the highway from Crater Rim Cabin is Puna Lu‘u Black Sand Beach Park. Often, you will find the endangered green sea turtles sunbathing on the rocks.
