My husband and I spent Valentine's evening at the Hotel Burgess this weekend as part of a prize package we won for being "Reedley's most romantic couple". ;) It was a lovely way to spend the holiday. From the atmosphere to the linens, it was magnificent. We are no more than six or so blocks away, but both agree we will go back again soon for a "couple's retreat"! Michael was an amazing host, all of the staff was incredibly friendly, the antiques were a wonderful bonus as well, as I am a collector. The food was marvelous, location was great for our "date", and the hubs and I couldn't get over the fact that we had an actual key to the room, LOL!! Not only will we return, but will encourage friends and family to experience it also. Thank you Michael, for making the room available to us on short notice. It was a real pleasure. We had never stayed at a B&B before, and the Hotel Burgess was a delightful first experience. We stayed on the way to pick up our kids in Kings Canyon.
Our room and bathroom were small but very clean and nicely furnished. [Since our stay, we hear many B&B's have shared bathrooms, so now we're especially appreciative].
The hotel was beautifully decorated. We would've liked to just sit in the lobby for a while enjoying the soft classical music and drinking coffee from the silver coffeepot. The young lady at the desk seemed to love her job and the hotel. She helped us choose the perfect restaurant for dinner. She was helpful without being pushy -- a nice balance.
We planned to have dinner and then turn in for the night. But on a walk through downtown we passed the restored Opera House, and realized there’d be a performance that night. It looked like an opportunity not to pass up, so we called for a reservation.
We walked to Valentinas for dinner. The atmosphere was lively, some of the dishes were available family style, the food was delicious, and the prices were terrific. We were thankful for such a wonderful recommendation.
From there we walked to the Opera House for the show. Both of us were a little concerned that we might be the only members of the audience, but it was very busy. We sat in the balcony. We had a table and chairs by the railing to move to when the show started. Between acts they served dessert and coffee, which was an unexpected plus. The River City Players did a great job and the show was fantastic!
In the morning we went down to our pre-ordered breakfast in the hotel's cafe, served right at the time we'd written on our order cards the night before. The food was warm and delicious, and the cafe was very pretty. We were about 45 minutes late getting to camp to pick up the kids, but who can blame us? View Reviewer Info

We researched B&B's starting with the Travel Fresno County website; decided on Hotel Burgess, because of its location and history. All our dealings with the Hotel were very pleasant, courteous and accommodating. The Hotel is part antique store/Hotel; many of the furnishings are for sale, but this is not obvious or does it detract from the period ambience. All the Hotel personnel were from the area and shared stories and recollections of what it is like to live in Reedley and the Central Valley; one reason we choose a B&B, to get a feeling for the culture of the town and surroundings. We were impressed by their kindness, warmth and the level of hospitality. They were not intrusive or prying. We loved the light in our room with its skylights; the antiques and the beautiful bed covering, but with a nod to the 21st century, there are very nice linens, complimentary toiletries and a HD plasma TV. We both slept well as the bed was super comfortable. We met the owner that night as we had trouble getting reception on the TV; he immediately came up and helped us figure out the controls. The breakfast was good, but there is only a smaller table in the lobby for seating. The Hotel is opening a Steak House adjacent to the Hotel in the next two months and it will provide the meals along with more dining area. The Hotel has a package deal with the Reedley Opera House, one block away, during their season. We were impressed that the owner, a native Central Valleyite, was actively involved in promoting and maintaining Reedley's history and architecture. We definitely will return as we were able to relive, if only for a short time, the history and culture of the Central Valley. By the way, the Blossom Trail was beautiful and easy to follow (the Fresno County site provides good maps and info); stopping and viewing the trees with the snow covered mountains in the background made for a beautiful, picturesque trip and adventure.
