My 2 girlfriends and I recently stayed at The Iris Inn for our annual weekend getaway. The inn is secluded in a wooded area yet easy access to the interstate. You almost feel like you've entered a lodge rather than a B & B when you walk through the front doors. You immediately see the gorgeous floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the living area. Large windows are all throughout to give you the feel of being outdoors. There are porches on both levels with rocking chairs, swings, and tables as well as a 3-story firetower for sitting and relaxing. Heidi and Dave were so hospitable with their directions, restaurant recommendations, local info, and friendly conversations. We were even treated to some wine tastings. We also enjoyed playing ball with their cute, well-behaved border collie, Katie. All the rooms are very clean and beautifully decorated. We stayed in The Duck Room, which is decorated in that theme, and it comfortably accommodated the 3 of us with a queen bed and daybed. The breakfasts were delicious and included baked omelette, waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, ham, fresh fruit, and much more. Heidi and Dave were very gracious and eager to please. I would highly recommend The Iris Inn to anyone wanting to escape to the mountains to a beautiful, peaceful retreat and be pampered for a while.

The Iris Inn is excellent in every respect. The well designed, nicely furnished Inn is very modern, clean and comfortable. It's located in a quiet wooded area away from noise and traffic, but only minutes away from shopping, restaurants, Skyline Drive, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The food is great, with a variety of gourmet dishes, and the innkeepers, Dave and Heidi Lanford, are the icing on the cake. They make you feel so comfortable and welcome that it's like visiting old friends. View Reviewer Info

The Inn is geared as a comfortable and elegant little getaway for adults. Couples w/ young children, should leave the kids with grandparents, as the Inn is a chance for a romantic getaway. Room pricing's more than fair; for the comfort, decor and superbly homemade breakfasts, it's a total bargain! Duck Room's handicapped accessible. This was our 6th stay. We were very fond of the previous owners so I had a little trepidation, wondering what Dave & Heidi might have chosen to modify. I needn't have worried. They retained cook Cindy, whose been the creative mastermind behind the exquisite breakfasts since before our 1st visit. Updating Dave & Heidi have done has improved the property inside and out, w/o sacrificing spirit & beauty of the Inn. Mellow, intelligent border collie, Kate, will make you feel at home. They've added supreme convenience of online booking and even advance order of extras - we added a fantastic picnic lunch for 2, used during a day's tour of the house and grounds of nearby Montpelier, and tacked on 2 pounds of smooth, rich Columbian coffeebeans from Escalera Roasters- same great coffee served at the Inn. The Inn's location, b/w the lovely Skyline Drive & the eye-soothing Blue Ridge Parkway. These are some of the most scenic routes in the US, if not the whole world. There’s access to multitudes of hiking trails for all skill levels off either drive or even catch a trek on a piece of the storied Appalachian Trail. A nearby restaurant, right down the road is South River Grill - nice memorabilia for horse lovers and good food. If Ray’s your waiter, you WILL be entertained and well served. Many cultural and historic sites, vineyards a short drive away. Mill Street Grill, a converted mill, often has entertainment; food's excellent. American Shakespeare Center, designed to mimic the Globe Theatre has medieval seating, enthusiastic players and great fun. View Reviewer Info

From the moment we drove up the hill and saw the beautiful setting overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, we were completely enchanted with the Iris Inn. The innkeepers were friendly, gracious, accommodating to our special requests, and just overall wonderful people to meet. They gave us great recommendations for dining in the area. The room was comfortable, spacious, and cozily appointed. (The beds were quite comfortable to sleep in, as well!) The trip was three mothers getting together for a weekend, and we found that the Duck room had plenty of space for 3 people to relax in (with a separate day bed). Then, there was breakfast - absolutely delicious each morning of our 2 night stay. The location is convenient to the highway, yet tucked away so that you feel you are in a mountain retreat. We made excursions to nearby historical sights as well as into Charlottesville itself - quite an easy trip from the inn. I heartily recommend this inn to anyone looking to stay in the area. I can't say enough about how nice, helpful, and friendly the innkeepers were! View Reviewer Info

The highlight of our recent weeklong vacation in Virginia was our two-night stay at the Iris Inn. The location (tucked away on a hilltop, though not far from major roads) was outstanding and easy to find. We liked the proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Skyline, Staunton, Charlottesville and Monticello - all less than 30 minutes away. For dinner, various restaurants are nearby - but you sure do not need lunch, since the Iris Inn's breakfasts are fresh, delicious and generous! The large rooms and common area are well-appointed, very clean and welcoming - we loved watching the sun set from the swing on our balcony outside the Pine Room. Lots of large windows throughout truly bring the outside in.
But what we liked most was meeting our hosts, Dave and Heidi. They made us feel very welcome and really wanted us to be comfortable and feel at home. Their attention to detail was evident in all aspects of our stay, and they are fun and kind people.
We hope to be back before too long - and in the mean time, we are happy to tell all our friends about the Iris Inn!
