At the time of my stay Bamboo's "innkeeper" is the genial Gary along with feline support from Maurice a big ginger cat. Judging by the comment book in my room, Gary seems to be continuing the legacy set down by previous hosts, As well as the peaceful and beautiful location Bamboo provides great rooms, and plentiful breakfast, and if you order in advance copious amounts of food in your lunch box. Whilst all of Volcano is lovely, the setting, hidden deep in the rain forest is peaceful, and soothing. The practice of everyone eating at the same table encourages both sociability and the exchange of tips and ideas about exploring the area. The downside is is that the place is so mellow, you might not be up and out exploring as early as you wanted to.... I stayed four nights, in many ways wish I had stayed longer.

We stayed 2 nights and wish we'd stayed longer ... Very comfortable and made to feel very welcome by hosts David & Dani. Fantastic breakfast, lovely room and great location. Stacks to do in and around Volcano. David and Dani recommended and helped us arrange a boat trip out to see a lava flowing into the ocean - absolutely fantastic! I'd recommend Bamboo Cottage without hesitation. Our thanks again to David and Dani.

We stayed in the Tree Top Suite at the nearby sister property Volcano Tree House Inn. Our room was 3 stories up in the canopy of a tropical rain forest. Windows on all walls, shades we never bothered to pull because it was very private and we did not want to block our unobstructed view of the jungle. Wrap around porch, complete with heater, comfy chairs, a quiet secluded place to read or watch birds or simply sit in the sun streaming through the upper branches. Big comfy bed with dual control heated mattress pad (it gets chilly at nights as it is above 5000 feet elevation). I spent a lot of time here reading and resting. Convenient kitchenette, walk in shower, books about birds and local history, good lighting on the stairs and walkways, I would not change a thing. Breakfast is at the sister property, Bamboo Orchid Cottage, a short walking distance away. Wonderful coffee, papaya fruit boats, homemade pastries, bagels, a good selection of granola, hardboiled eggs, yogurt, make-your-own waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. Suzy and her niece took good care of us. We had the Volcano Adventure package complete with a helicopter tour, a self-guided audio driving tour of Volcano National Park, and a private tour with a local guide of the Puna coast. A good choice. We ate just about everywhere in the town of Volcano and liked it all, went to the Volcano Winery, went to the Park which is open 24-7, saw the petroglyphs (a long hot walk but worth it), ventured out to see the new lava flowing out of tubes into the ocean one night - spectacular, natural fireworks! We would definitely come back and try the new birder package. If you do go to this part of Hawaii, bring a fleece jacket and be prepared for daily rains. It's a rain forest...sun and heat are a short drive in any direction.

We stayed here in September 2008, on our first trip to Hawaii. Coming from Australia, we had no idea what to expect, and given that we were staying 5 nights, were anxious that we would find the accommodation not up to standard. We were pleasantly surprised by the spaciousness, cleanliness and friendliness we encountered. Our room was a comfy little slice of paradise, where we could wash off the trails, and relax in the most comfortable bed in our entire month away. Breakfasts were fantastic, with the best local fruits on offer. And don't let anyone tell you not to go to Volcano because of the vog - Volcano's air is amazingly clear - all the vog is in Kona!

My wife and I both loved our stay. The setting is very peaceful, I felt like I went back in time. The cottage itself has a cozy, at home feel to it. I loved the beautiful wood floors. We enjoyed the hot tub on the back deck, very tranquil. It was a great location for exploring the eastern side of the island, I highly recommend staying to anyone traveling to the Big Island. The fresh baked scones we were served for breakfast were delicious!

My wife booked a one week stay here at the last minute when it was clear I was melting down at work. We should have come years sooner. The treetop was a fabulous base from which to enjoy the Puna coast. Apapanes gliding from branch to branch, right outside your window. Very quiet and very dark at night. The suite itself was spacious, kept spotless, and the kitchenette came in handy. The B&B itself is really nicely located, a quick trip to the volcano and the craters, and a short ride to Hilo and the coast. Volcano town was also quite a nice surprise, with all styles of restaurants (including a Thai restaurant that would not be out of place in San Francisco's Mission). Suzy, the inkeeper for our stay, was gracious and gregarious. Hawaii is where my wife and I have had some of our most memorable vacations, and our stay at Bamboo Orchid was great.
