We found the Stonewall Jackson Inn by searching Google for B&Bs in Harrisonburg. After reviewing the dozen or so Google presented, we settled on the SJI because of location, apparent ambiance presented by its interesting website, and an interest in meeting Wayne, the innkeeper.
We are satisfied with our choice on all counts. Well-written directions brought us to the door, first try. Check-in went very smoothly, and we settled into our room within minutes of arrival.
Our well-appointed room, the Lee room, included a very comfortable queen-sized bed, and we even found ‘extra’ pillows in the closet. While Wayne, our host, provides gratis sodas and water from a refrigerator in the kitchen (as well as real, glass, glasses of various styles), a small refrigerator in the room keeps the traveler’s personal beverages cold.
If asked, Wayne also provides an informative overview of Harrisonburg lore and James Madison University facts, as well as perceptive recommendations for dinner in the historic center of town. An easy 15-minute walk from the Inn places guests at Court House Square (maybe 20 minutes back up the short rise) with its historic sites and restaurants.
Wayne also presents his memorable breakfast with aplomb. We first learned of it by enticing early morning baking aromas that filled the Inn and, upon arrival at a time of our choice, received a complete, individually prepared, breakfast that literally lasted all day. One can eat on the deck or in a cozy dining area adjacent to the kitchen. Every whim is met with pleasant, affirmative service. When we felt we could eat no more, we received a luscious poppy seed cake. Will power may be needed.
If anyone entertains the notion of becoming an innkeeper, a stay with Wayne at the Stonewall Jackson Inn will inform candidates for such ventures how to create an ambiance where visitors become personal guests and leave with the intention of returning.

We recently had an opportunity to overnight in Harrisonburg, Virginia, at The Stonewall Jackson Inn, a restored 19th century mansion. Our stay was very pleasant and we plan to return when we visit Harrisonburg again. Our room, the Philip Sheridan (all ten rooms are named for Civil War generals), was clean, fresh, bright, quiet and very comfortable – a combination of qualities that’s hard to beat. The inn’s owner, Dr. Wayne Engel, and his staff are very friendly and engaging, adding to the enjoyment of our stay. Wayne’s Sunday morning breakfast was a real treat and truly one that we’ll remember. For Civil War buffs visiting this historical area of the Shenandoah Valley, a stay at the Stonewall Jackson will make you feel like you’re home among family and friends. All others will thoroughly enjoy the experience, as well. View Reviewer Info

My boyfriend and I live 4 hours away from each other. I looked for a place to stay that was in Harrisonburg because it is about ½ way between us. I looked at the local hotel and Bed and Breakfast. The prices were comparable. I decided to stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, what a good choice.
Once I reserved a room online (so easy), I was contacted immediately through email by the staff regarding my questions. I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with a couple’s massage (something I’ve always wanted to do). Even though it was only a week away, Wayne and his staff went out of their way to make my wish come true.
When we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and shown around the house, which made us feel like we were truly welcome. I remember my comment as we were settling in our room, “I feel like I am at Grandma’s house.” The rooms were so clean and comfortable.
We waited down by the fire, as things were set up for our massages that were given right in our room, and browsed through the information regarding local restaurants, which was provided by Wayne’s staff. Our messages were very relaxing. After a wonderful German meal (our favorite food), we came back to the Inn and relaxed in our room.
In the morning we took our time getting up and were greeted in the kitchen by Wayne and Tony, the same two that greeted us the day before when we checked in. Our breakfast started with coffee for him and tea for me. We were given fresh fruit and juice while our breakfast was being prepared. We were served eggs benedict with smoked salmon, bacon and stewed apples. DELICIOUS!!!!!
As we were ready to check out, Wayne and Tony asked us about our stay and talked to us like family. What a FABULOUS weekend we had at Wayne’s home – The Stonewall Jackson Inn. I look forward to staying there again.

Staying at the Stonewall Jackson Inn is like being at home and being treated like royalty. Wayne Engel, owner, welcomes each guest and goes out of his way to personalize their B & B experience with warmth, humor, good service, and delicious food. Rooms are clean, comfortable, spacious with individual bathrooms, and the sheets are heavenly. We highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson in Harrisonburg, VA.

If you love magnificent old houses, a great location for getting around VA, and French toast that is exceptional, then you have to stop here.
My combined family reunion, genealogical research and novel writing trip was certain to be a disaster from the start, either in distances I had to cover in a fixed period of time, or finding a good place to eat.
The Stonewall Jackson WAS easy to find (as promised, even in the dark!), Wayne was very welcoming and a huge bonus was the nearby "Clementines" that he recomended, a five star surprise in this little college town, and the town's historical interest to me.
The room was quaint (THANK GOD, NO MODERNIZATION EXCEPT FOR THE CONVENIENCES), clean and comfortable. What more could you ask?
Maybe meeting up and having breakfast with the Annie Moses Band, who were also fans of The Stonewall Jackson.
We'll be going back soon! View Reviewer Info

I was traveling alone from Philadelphia to South Carolina when I ran into icey roads near Harrisonburg and decided to get off the highway. Fortunately for me, I took the first Harrisonburg exit and started watching for hotels. The first one I came to was filled up but they recommended the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B just down the road. Again - lucky for me. I was greeted at the Inn by the charming owner who made me feel at home right away. When I saw the reasonable rates and the beautifully appointed rooms, I was pretty sure I wanted to stay; however, after he treated me to a cup of hot chocolate while I sat by the fire to thaw out and described the rooms, the ammenities, the breakfast, and offered to go out in the icey conditions to bring in my luggage - well, that sealed the deal. There were several other guests who had taken refuge from the storm - most of them guided to the Inn by their GPS. I joined another person traveling alone to go to dinner at a nearby restaurant (Clementine) - and the food and service were truly outstanding. Back at the Inn for the evening I enjoyed chatting with other travelers, then sat by the fire to finish my book, and eventually sank into the very comfortable bed under luxury sheets - what a treat!. The next morning, I awoke to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon frying. The breakfast was wonderful - joice of juices, delicious coffee, fruit cup, eggs benedict, and mouth watering fried apples - way beyond what I have experienced at other B&B's. I really hated to leave the Stonewall Jackson Inn. I will definitely be back - and will recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley.

We day hike in the midpart of the Shenandoah National Park 3 to 4 times a year. Harrisonburg, VA is an easy 25 miles drive west of the Park’s Skyline Drive and a natural place to stay. In a first visit more than five years ago, we found the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg to be an exceptional place to spend the weekend. We’ve never stayed elsewhere since. The house, grounds, and guest rooms are roomy and a visual treat throughout. The food and service provided by the Inn’s staff are very good – and quickly come to seem like home. Over the course of our stays, we have experienced gorgeous sunrises, sunsets, and the occasional total lunar eclipse (which turned out to be totally clouded over back in Washington DC) as part of the package deal. We’ve found the Inn’s large living room area, with its sofas and several fireplaces, to be a great place to relax and read for an extended period – and a very workable antidote to weather outside that was supposed to be sunny but turned out not to be. Harrionsburg is a walkable college town, and Stonewall Jackson Inn well placed as a point to start. We keep coming back for good reason. View Reviewer Info

Stonewall Jackson Inn mérite son logo "A night's delight- a breakfast to remember"

By internet, we had made a reservation for one night in Stonewall Jackson Inn, during a fortnight tourism trip in Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC.
We founded that so agreable that we stayed another nignt, so we could better enjoy the Blue Ridge mountains and the charm of the inn.
Comfortable beds, nice and elegant decoraion, interesting exchanges about History, the places to go, etc. And nice helps given in a so friendly way (for instance, they helped us to plug - outside - a too large electrical apparatus).
And those breakfasts: Quality, variety, beauty. True meals, which gave us the occasion to discover regional products .
