We stayed at Stonewall Jackson Inn after finding it on the web. We couldn't have been more happy withy our stay. Wayne, the Innkeeper was a gracious and generous host, inviting us to accompany him to a concert at James Madison University where another of his guests was performing. Wayne made us feel so at home in Harrisonberg, we will be looking for excuses to return.

Beautiful, well-appointed room. Incredibly friendly and welcoming host. Amazing breakfasts. Exceptional service - when we asked about laundry, Wayne and Pam offered to wash our stuff and delivered it back to our door next morning, all dry and neatly folded, at no extra charge. Staying here was a real highlight.

We found the Stonewall Jackson Inn by searching Google for B&Bs in Harrisonburg. After reviewing the dozen or so Google presented, we settled on the SJI because of location, apparent ambiance presented by its interesting website, and an interest in meeting Wayne, the innkeeper. We are satisfied with our choice on all counts. Well-written directions brought us to the door, first try. Check-in went very smoothly, and we settled into our room within minutes of arrival. Our well-appointed room, the Lee room, included a very comfortable queen-sized bed, and we even found ‘extra’ pillows in the closet. While Wayne, our host, provides gratis sodas and water from a refrigerator in the kitchen (as well as real, glass, glasses of various styles), a small refrigerator in the room keeps the traveler’s personal beverages cold. If asked, Wayne also provides an informative overview of Harrisonburg lore and James Madison University facts, as well as perceptive recommendations for dinner in the historic center of town. An easy 15-minute walk from the Inn places guests at Court House Square (maybe 20 minutes back up the short rise) with its historic sites and restaurants. Wayne also presents his memorable breakfast with aplomb. We first learned of it by enticing early morning baking aromas that filled the Inn and, upon arrival at a time of our choice, received a complete, individually prepared, breakfast that literally lasted all day. One can eat on the deck or in a cozy dining area adjacent to the kitchen. Every whim is met with pleasant, affirmative service. When we felt we could eat no more, we received a luscious poppy seed cake. Will power may be needed. If anyone entertains the notion of becoming an innkeeper, a stay with Wayne at the Stonewall Jackson Inn will inform candidates for such ventures how to create an ambiance where visitors become personal guests and leave with the intention of returning. Me and my sister had a wonderful stay at this Inn. Marvelous breakfast and a wonderful room. Very nice people. I lieve in the Netherlands and my sister in South Carolina. To be there together made it very special. Would like to come again. More than worthwile to visit. My sister is a regular visiter and I know now why. Fantastische B&B. Heerlijk ontbijt en erg leuke en goed verzorgde kamers. Had er wel langer willen blijven. Heb er wel een trip vanuit Nederland voor over. Virginia is een leuke vakantieplek. Marthe. oktober 2009

I am so glad I have the option of writing a review for this place. In addition to how beautiful the grounds and actual Inn is, the whole atmosphere is relaxing. Checkout time is 11 and I could barely bring myself to leave! Breakfast was delicious, actually, beyond delicious and I couldn't stop raving about the coffee! But the most noteworthy aspect of the whole experience at Stonewall Jackson in is Rudi, the substitute inn keeper. She made the stay there beyond anything I could have hoped for, we threatened to take her home with us. So to all of you who may not be able to make it in time to meet her, I'm sorry...so maybe you better hurry and book a stay so you can, haha!

What a charming bed and breakfast! We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay - great accomodations and staff. Wayne stayed up quite late to greet us and get us settled. Our room was lovely and incredibly clean and fresh. Breakfast the next morning was wonderful - the best we've ever had at a B&B. We would highly recommend this inn for anyone looking to stay in the area. Amy and Pete Sacco

My fiancé and I were lucky enough to stumble upon this delightful inn while motorcycling through Harrisonburg, PA. We knew we wanted to spend the evening at a B&B, and stopped for suggestions. We were pointed to the Stonewall Jackson Inn by a local merchant. What a wonderful addition to our weekend! The home was charming, and the staff attentive without being overbearing. Our room was great, and decorated with the same understated elegance as rest of the Inn. Breakfast was delicious, and the coffee fresh. We are already planning to return in the fall for another visit with Wayne and his delightful staff at The Stonewall Jackson Inn.

Tony and Shannon were kind, and wonderfully pleasant to talk to as well as many of the other staffers I saw. We recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg, VA. We were returning north from Florida via Rock Hill, SC. We were looking for a B and B on RT 81 going north to Hershey PA. This was a good choice. It is just up the hill from downtown Harrisonburg and a little longer walk to the James Madison University campus. Tony met us at the door and introduced us to the staff and the layout. It was clean and cozy and we had a great sleep. Everything worked and the house was clean , well organized, relaxed and welcoming We had a delicious breakfast prepared by Wayne and Tony served on the sun porch, Sunday morning, after returning from Mass. We walked to dinner at Joshua Wilton House the evening before for a delightful dinner and arriving early for our reservation waited on the wrap around porch overlooking Main St. Jean and Jerry

We had a very nice romantic getaway at the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg. The house was very nicley restored and decorated, not overcrowded with antiques or kitschy. There were a number of other guests, but I did not feel crowded or our personal space intruded upon. We werew able to kekep to ourselves if we wanted, or interact with other guests or the hosts. The owner and staff who work there are really cool; they make you feel genuinely welcome but don't come across as insincere in their hospitality. They are friendly and engaging, with very interesting personal histories and are willing to share themselves if you want to go there. If not, they are sensitive to not force themselves or their stories upon their guests. Personally, I would have liked to stay a couple more days to get to know Wayne (the owner) better. The breakfasts are realy great; they take pride in fixing the food well. There are two young men who help out with breakfasts; again, their calm and friendly demeanors help set the tone for the day. It's interesting in that there is no choice for breakfasts; you eat what is prepared (there are other cereal self-serve options as well, however). I found it nice that I did not have to make up my mind about breakfast; it was simply given to us. The Shenandoah National Park is about 30 minutes away; you do not have to get on the interstate to get to the park. It is beautiful with lots of good hiking trails (fairly steep terrain, however). There is also a beautifu arboretum on the campus of James Madison University which is located in Harrisonburg about 10 minutes away from the Inn. It's quite a large parklike aera with lots of good walking trails; in early May we hit some nice colors/flowers. The historic part of downtown Harrisonburg is a work in progress; there are a couple fun student-oriented resturants/bars and there are ongoing efforts to revitalize and re-invest.

We recently had an opportunity to overnight in Harrisonburg, Virginia, at The Stonewall Jackson Inn, a restored 19th century mansion. Our stay was very pleasant and we plan to return when we visit Harrisonburg again. Our room, the Philip Sheridan (all ten rooms are named for Civil War generals), was clean, fresh, bright, quiet and very comfortable – a combination of qualities that’s hard to beat. The inn’s owner, Dr. Wayne Engel, and his staff are very friendly and engaging, adding to the enjoyment of our stay. Wayne’s Sunday morning breakfast was a real treat and truly one that we’ll remember. For Civil War buffs visiting this historical area of the Shenandoah Valley, a stay at the Stonewall Jackson will make you feel like you’re home among family and friends. All others will thoroughly enjoy the experience, as well.

My boyfriend and I live 4 hours away from each other. I looked for a place to stay that was in Harrisonburg because it is about ½ way between us. I looked at the local hotel and Bed and Breakfast. The prices were comparable. I decided to stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, what a good choice. Once I reserved a room online (so easy), I was contacted immediately through email by the staff regarding my questions. I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with a couple’s massage (something I’ve always wanted to do). Even though it was only a week away, Wayne and his staff went out of their way to make my wish come true. When we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and shown around the house, which made us feel like we were truly welcome. I remember my comment as we were settling in our room, “I feel like I am at Grandma’s house.” The rooms were so clean and comfortable. We waited down by the fire, as things were set up for our massages that were given right in our room, and browsed through the information regarding local restaurants, which was provided by Wayne’s staff. Our messages were very relaxing. After a wonderful German meal (our favorite food), we came back to the Inn and relaxed in our room. In the morning we took our time getting up and were greeted in the kitchen by Wayne and Tony, the same two that greeted us the day before when we checked in. Our breakfast started with coffee for him and tea for me. We were given fresh fruit and juice while our breakfast was being prepared. We were served eggs benedict with smoked salmon, bacon and stewed apples. DELICIOUS!!!!! As we were ready to check out, Wayne and Tony asked us about our stay and talked to us like family. What a FABULOUS weekend we had at Wayne’s home – The Stonewall Jackson Inn. I look forward to staying there again.

If you love magnificent old houses, a great location for getting around VA, and French toast that is exceptional, then you have to stop here. My combined family reunion, genealogical research and novel writing trip was certain to be a disaster from the start, either in distances I had to cover in a fixed period of time, or finding a good place to eat. The Stonewall Jackson WAS easy to find (as promised, even in the dark!), Wayne was very welcoming and a huge bonus was the nearby "Clementines" that he recomended, a five star surprise in this little college town, and the town's historical interest to me. The room was quaint (THANK GOD, NO MODERNIZATION EXCEPT FOR THE CONVENIENCES), clean and comfortable. What more could you ask? Maybe meeting up and having breakfast with the Annie Moses Band, who were also fans of The Stonewall Jackson. We'll be going back soon!

I was traveling alone from Philadelphia to South Carolina when I ran into icey roads near Harrisonburg and decided to get off the highway. Fortunately for me, I took the first Harrisonburg exit and started watching for hotels. The first one I came to was filled up but they recommended the Stonewall Jackson Inn B&B just down the road. Again - lucky for me. I was greeted at the Inn by the charming owner who made me feel at home right away. When I saw the reasonable rates and the beautifully appointed rooms, I was pretty sure I wanted to stay; however, after he treated me to a cup of hot chocolate while I sat by the fire to thaw out and described the rooms, the ammenities, the breakfast, and offered to go out in the icey conditions to bring in my luggage - well, that sealed the deal. There were several other guests who had taken refuge from the storm - most of them guided to the Inn by their GPS. I joined another person traveling alone to go to dinner at a nearby restaurant (Clementine) - and the food and service were truly outstanding. Back at the Inn for the evening I enjoyed chatting with other travelers, then sat by the fire to finish my book, and eventually sank into the very comfortable bed under luxury sheets - what a treat!. The next morning, I awoke to the smell of coffee brewing and bacon frying. The breakfast was wonderful - joice of juices, delicious coffee, fruit cup, eggs benedict, and mouth watering fried apples - way beyond what I have experienced at other B&B's. I really hated to leave the Stonewall Jackson Inn. I will definitely be back - and will recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great place to stay in the Shenandoah Valley.

We day hike in the midpart of the Shenandoah National Park 3 to 4 times a year. Harrisonburg, VA is an easy 25 miles drive west of the Park’s Skyline Drive and a natural place to stay. In a first visit more than five years ago, we found the Stonewall Jackson Inn in Harrisonburg to be an exceptional place to spend the weekend. We’ve never stayed elsewhere since. The house, grounds, and guest rooms are roomy and a visual treat throughout. The food and service provided by the Inn’s staff are very good – and quickly come to seem like home. Over the course of our stays, we have experienced gorgeous sunrises, sunsets, and the occasional total lunar eclipse (which turned out to be totally clouded over back in Washington DC) as part of the package deal. We’ve found the Inn’s large living room area, with its sofas and several fireplaces, to be a great place to relax and read for an extended period – and a very workable antidote to weather outside that was supposed to be sunny but turned out not to be. Harrionsburg is a walkable college town, and Stonewall Jackson Inn well placed as a point to start. We keep coming back for good reason.

Les chambres donnent sur les pelouses et le verger. we can not say enough positive things about the stonewall jackson inn in harrisonburg, va.. every aspect of our stay made us feel special-- from the attnetiveness and thoroughness of the innkeepers and their staff, to the unbelievably cozy, clean and inviting rooms and common rooms of this wonderful mansion.. the art, antiques, windows, huge trees, total charm effect (not to mention the 'unforgettable breakfast!!) all combined to make us glow with happiness! we will definitely return, definitely recommend this inn to everyone who may ever be even remotely in the vacinity of harrisonburg, and we will always cherish the memory of our first stay at the stonewall jackson inn.. by the way, it was the BEST night's sleep (and a great afternoon nap) that i personally have ever had! TOTAL comfort...

Our daughter is a senior at JMU. We travel from new Jersey and during the past four years we've stayed at other motels & inns in the area. Once we stayed at the Stonewall Jackson Inn, we never went any where else. We can not praise the Stonewall Jackson Inn and its staff enough. It truly has become our home away from home.

Stonewall Jackson Inn mérite son logo "A night's delight- a breakfast to remember" Chantal du Québec - - - - - By internet, we had made a reservation for one night in Stonewall Jackson Inn, during a fortnight tourism trip in Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC. We founded that so agreable that we stayed another nignt, so we could better enjoy the Blue Ridge mountains and the charm of the inn. Comfortable beds, nice and elegant decoraion, interesting exchanges about History, the places to go, etc. And nice helps given in a so friendly way (for instance, they helped us to plug - outside - a too large electrical apparatus). And those breakfasts: Quality, variety, beauty. True meals, which gave us the occasion to discover regional products . Stonewall Jackson Inn is OK with its logo: "A night's delight- a breakfast to remember" Chantal, from Québec

Absolutely delightful in every way! My college roommate and I were in Harrisonburg for a college reunion and wanted to stay in a charming location. The Stonewall Jackson Inn exceeded our expectations and Innkeepers Wayne and Debbie could not be more welcoming. Wayne is a fabulous cook and we loved the breakfasts both mornings. The Belle Boyd room was perfect for us with beautiful antique furniture and two marvelously comfortable beds. It was convenient to both James Madison University and the nearby shops and restaurants of downtown Harrisonburg. I would go back in a minute!

We came across the Stonewall Jackson by accident but were very glad we did. The welcome was warm and the room well equipped and comfortable. Our host had lots of advice on places to eat and arranged a table for us in a very lively but fun place that still served good food. The following morning we enjoyed our breakfast on the terrace, cooked to order and just as we liked it. Nothing was too much trouble but we couldn't, in all honesty, say it was the best B&B in the world (as Wayne joked that it was); it was probably the best one we stayed in during our time in the States in July 2008. Thanks guys - we'd love to call again if we're in that part of the world.

One of the best things about the Stonewall Jackson Inn is the house itself. The 19th century house is beautifully mainained by the inkeepers. The host for our stay, Wayne Engel, was very knowledgeable about the area and the history around it. He was extremely helpful when it came to activities we could do in Harrisonburg, and what restaraunts to dine at. Wayne also prepared a spectacular breakfast, and we loved that he makes breakfast at your convenience. In our room (the Robert E. Lee), we found a spotless, beautifully maintained room, with little snacks like Oreos and cheese crackers, and a binder full of info on the house and the city we were staying in. Downstairs in the kitchen Wayne keeps two small refrigerators for the guests to help themselves to sodas and bottled water. All of these pleasant little touches made our stay at the Stonewall Jackson Inn fabulous. We know exactly where to stay if we find ourselves in Harrisonburg, VA again.

We loved our stay at Stonewall Jackson. We were headed to a motel for the night, and there was a special price sign outside the B&B so we stopped. Wayne and Peter were great. We got our room, and some helpful information when we arrived. The next morning breakfast was served and it was wonderful. We found our talks with Peter fascinating. When it was time to leave we noticed we had a flat tire, and Wayne helped us blow up the tire, and directed us to a station that could fix it for us. They were both very hospitable, and helpful Jim and Sharon Sellers

My partner and I travel to Hburg now and then to visit friends, and ended up staying here when our regular B&B was booked. It was a nice change & we now plan to stay there again in the future. What made the place for us was the friendliness of Wayne & Peter, who really did take efforts to make us feel at "home." The breakfast the next morning was delicious too--& not overly sweet or filling, as it has been at other B&Bs we've visited. Plus (and this was a plus for us!) we were the only gay couple visting that particular night/morning, but not once did we feel uncomfortable or out of place. A very friendly/welcoming place to stay!

the stonewall jackson inn in harrisonburg, va truly is our second home...wayne and peter go out of their way to provide the very best in all aspects of our stay..my wife and i have been down there twice and we are making it our annual anniversary trip..for history buffs the inn truly has a civil war feel to it..the rooms are cozy and the info provided in the welcome packets gives you a wide variety of activities to experience and enjoy. from skyline drive to wine country to a wide array of caverns to visit, shopping, and dining, you will not be bored in your stay...the breakfasts are phenomenal.. from the eggs benedict with smoked salmon to the french toast with virginia country ham..(definitely recommend!!!)..you will understand the meaning of "a breakfast to remember". to give you an idea of the level of commitment they have to give you a stay to remember..my wife and i celebrated our 1st wedding anniversary last month..wayne was going to make reservations for us at a local inn serving wonderful food.unfortunately the inn was rented out for the night..so he made reservations for us at a restaurant about 25 miles south of harrisonburg..and gave us 20 dollars out of his own pocket for gas...not to shabby..we will be back next year and for many years to come..

We were part of the cycling group mentioned in a previous review and couldn't agree more. They were very accommodating to the focus of our vacation, cycling on the low traffic, scenic roads in the Shenandoah Valley. Peter was especially helpful in accommodating the requests of our cycling group. They cleared out a place under the deck to park bikes, provided extra ice and water. Eggs Benedict with Salmon or black coffee with half a piece of toast or anything in between seemed to be no problem at all. The property and rooms are very clean and well maintained. It's within easy walking distance of many of the town's shops and restaurants. The Inkeepers have negotiated free dessert or discount on dinner with a couple of the nearby eating establishments, that's always nice. We would highly recommend the Stonewall Jackson Inn and look forward to our next visit.

We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary at this romantic B&B and it was an absolutely perfect experience! The inn is beautifully restored and decorated in the Civil War era. It is clean and comfortable with modern conveniences. Reasonably priced. Ideally located within walking distance of restaurants and shops. A short drive to wineries and nighttime entertainment. The innkeepers, Wayne, Tanja, and Peter, are relaxed and friendly. Breakfast was delicious. We highly recommend the massage therapy we enjoyed in the privacy of our room. We will definitely be back to celebrate again next year.

The Stonewall Jackson Inn is without a doubt the best B & B I've experienced. The building and grounds are beautiful and well kept, the rooms are lovely, comfortable and clean. But what caused me to return many times was the warm and friendly atmosphere created by the owner Wayne and innkeeper Peter. I really felt like they had opened their home to me and that I was welcome to relax and enjoy by sitting on the large wrap around porch or on the patio under the wisteria. They were always available but never pushy and welcomed me with genuine interest and appreciation every time I arrived. After driving 12 hours from NH to VA to visit my daughter at James Madison University, it was such a relief to land at the Stonewall Jackson Inn. And, did I mention the fabulous breakfast?

This was our first experience with B&B stays in the U.S. We quickly discovered that after a day on the road, it's far superior to staying in even the top rated of hotels -- no noisy people, just a nice relaxing afternoon and evening in a homelike setting followed by as fine a breakfast the next morning as my Mother could have made from scratch! The nice peaceful and quiet setting in the Virginia mountains was most relaxing. Hats off to Wayne and Peter for the superb job! We'll be back again on our next trip North.
