Even before I arrived, I knew I was going to have a wonderful weekend. My email exchanges with Barbara had made it clear that these folks CARE about customer service. For my birthday a small group of friends and I decided to stay at China Doll. It was the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in and I have been to many (including the Drake) in Chicago. The steam showers, aromatherapy oils, multiple bathrobes and a breakfast stocked kitchen went above and beyond my expectations. The unit was ready for us and it smelled wonderful and had classical music playing lightly in the background. I would recommend China Doll to ANYONE wishing to stay in Chicago.

Absolutely great hosts, location, and amenities. We had four children and two dogs in a Chicago winter. What a joy to come home to two fireplaces and a steam room after a run! We have been staying in China Doll properties for more than two years now, three times in total, every time we visit Chicago. Apart from the homely atmosphere and extremely well run guest house that we learned to take for granted, Jim and Yanan endeavor to meet our every wish,however unusual. We booked for a four day girls weekend at the China Doll Coach House. Jim and Yanan have thought of everything to make China Doll a home away from home. We had great communication and directions ahead of time, found the house to be clean and fully furnished and the breakfast food they provide in the kitchen is the crowning touch in hospitality! We found an internet-connected computer, plasma tv with cable, Starbucks coffee, plenty of towels and blankets, neighborhood guide, really there was nothing that we needed that we didn't find. Great value, great location, great hosts!

We were so impressed with #3 on N Burling that we canceled a reservation we had over at the Blake to stay an additional three days. The neighborhood is great, the amenities (bagels, juice, milk, eggs, breakfast meats, cereal, etc.) completely surprised us. Having access to the laundry + all the toiletries, guidebooks, maps and food provided mean the next time I visit I'm only packing half of what I brought. Definitely recommend.

Never expected to find such a great alternative to a hotel. In town for a convention, I found all the hotels booked and came across the China Doll quite by accidient and as a last resort. I would highly recommend the Country House which I found to be comfortable, quiet, modern extremely well appointed and a joy overall. I am sure all their units are comparable. I would not hestitate to recommend the China Doll to anybody and it will be my first call not last on the next visit to Chicago.

On a father-daughter trip to Chicago for 4 days and as my usual hotels were filled, I was able to book a room at the China Doll Guest House on North Burling. When we arrived, we were totally overwhelmed by the set up and it was a fantastic experience. It is now by far, my favorite destination when it Chicago. Location was super and the whole unit was so ideal, and you could see the owners great concern for every detail to make ones stay so easy and stressful. We had a wonderful vacation in Chicago, and truly enjoyed the accomodations. It felt like we were real residents in the city. It was a nice neighborhood and the apartments (we stayed in two different ones) were all very well kept and furnished. We had a small group of friends descend on Chicago for an informal reunion and China Doll Country provided the hub. We had a great time in part because of the accomodations. Convenient, accessible, modern and part of a totally Chicago experience. While the wonderful hosts were accessible each day, they did not cook for us. However, they did stock the refrigerator with everything we needed for a wonderful breakfast each day. In fact, the entire unit was supplied with everything we needed besides meals and drink: everything from internet to REAL soap and shampoo to fruit and spices. Any issue or question we had was quickly addressed. It was very comfortable which cannot always be said of even elegant B&Bs. If I am staying in the City more than one night, this is where I am going to be!

For the price we were expecting basic accomodations but the china doll way exceeded anything we could have hoped for. Spacious unit with comfortable beds and futon which can be used for extra sleeping space. Fresh towels and linens. Nicely furnished providing multiple areas for visiting. Upgraded kitchen fully stocked with anything you would need for a home cooked meal. Located in a wonderful charming neighborhood with a ton of shops and great restaurants all just a short stroll away. Free breakfast foods are provided which adds such a great finishing touch. Parking is the only negative but you can rent the garage space or spaces for $10/day which is well worth it!!

What can I say about this place other than fantastic it has everything and I mean everything that a family would need we stayed here for a week recently (July 08) and I have say it is the best apt we have ever hired and for the price for 4 its hard to beat. transport to downtown is excellent around 5-6 mins walking to the metro, plenty of bars and places to eat just around the block All in All a very nice visit and if we come back to Chicago I would have no hesitation in re booking. All I can say is you get your money's worth and so much more!! Want to BBQ in the back, watch a movie, cook dinner, browse the internet on the free computer, wash a load of laundry or check out the neighborhood? You can do all of this and more. You will love the stay and the fridge stocked with breakfast items. From bagels, muffins, and yogurt to eggs, bacon and your choice of milk. You won't be dissapointed!!!

My cousin recommended a bed and breakfast website and that's how I found the China Doll. Sure it wasn't right downtown but that's about the only thing it wasn't. My parents were traveling with my husband, son and I. The China Doll was perfect for the five of us, we stayed at the original China Doll in the 2nd floor (China Doll #3 I believe). There were two bedrooms, both were small but fit us just fine and the beds were comfy. There were two living areas a full kitchen and dining (with a stocked fridge for breakfast) and a office with a functioning computer and printer (I can't tell you how many times we've stayed someplace and the office equipment didn't work). The bathroom was laid out great for the four of us with the shower, toilet and sinks all separated by doors or screens. The back patio was a really nice place to relax and grill. Compared to what we would have been staying in at a hotel....it was so nice to all be together and all have our space. We were able to park in the garage right behind the building which made it really convenient and using a GPS we were able to get around Chicago no problem. The neighborhood the China Doll is in is really nice and pretty much anything you need is in walking distance. We met both Jim and Yanan our first day there and both were very pleasant, instructed us on where to find more food and linens and then made themselves scarce....perfect! If I had to complain about anything it would be the decor of the house....a little too Asian for me, but what are you going to expect if you stay at a place called "The China Doll". The front sitting room was decorated with about 100 pictures of Jim and Yanan (maybe I'm exaggerating...maybe I'm not, I didn't count them but there were a TON). I would recomend The China Doll to anyone and if we ever make it back to Chicago we'll stay there again.

Our stay in Chicago was made very luxurious homey and we really felt like we saw a real part of the city by staying in one of China Dolls apartments. The place was beautifully done out and a great selection of breakfast items provided. The place was super equipped and everything one could need, this really was well thought out accomedation. Our hosts were easy to contact and friendly. The only small thing was the computer and phone did not work when we got there. The phone issue was quickly resolved and they let us use the computer in there own office which was good of them. I would highly recommend this to everybody coming to Chicago, it is so much better than hotels, cheaper and nicer. The location was great and felt safe, easy for transport and had some great bars and eating places really close. Thank you China Doll, we love your bird feeder and balcony too.

Located in north Lincoln Park, close to public transportation and major roadways, it is a quiet hideaway in a vintage Chicago neighborhood. The accommodations are top notch, with a wonderful kitchen, dining area, sleeping and bathing accommodations, and pleasant amenities. Secure, off street parking is available. The owners, Jim and Yanan Haring, are attentive to their guests needs and immediately responsive when help is needed. This is a five-star experience.

What a fantastic place! The pictures on the website don't do it justice - we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. I'm so glad we found it. We couldn't believe what we got for our money here. I think we can say that this is truely one of the last good deals on the planet. Everthing we could've wanted was here - it was a temptation to stay in and enjoy it while we could, even if we missed the city sights!
