We celebrated our 1st Wedding Anniversary staying in the Somerset Cottage. We were here last year for our honeymoon and returned for our anniversary. We are already booked again for another visit in 2010. Hawk Valley is a very peaceful place with out of this world breakfasts. It is only a short drive into Galena and Dubuque. Hawk Valley Retreat is a great place for anyone to rest and relax and Somerset Cottage has the best view of all.

This was our second stay at Hawk Valley, and it will not be our last! We love that is set apart from the main town of Galena; we can go into town for shopping and the hustle and bustle, and come back at night for a truly serene and quiet evening. Jane is so wonderful, and her breakfasts are simply to die for. Her French toast bake is too delicious for words! She will help set up reseravations for dinner, and even mail you items you forgot after check-out. :) Cottages are so quaint, and we love the hot tub and kitchenette.

My Husband & I always enjoy our stay at Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages! We have just past our 2nd year, but intend on many many more years of spending our anniversary there. The Cottages are so cozy and private. The Breakfasts are so decadent. The Innkeepers make you feel like family. When we visited this last time a guest suggested a bon fire & Jane was happy to oblige. We roasted marshmallows, and made s'mores, talked & mingled. The grounds are beautiful and the nature trails are spectacular. If you like being out in the country, this is your place to be! We have already booked our stay there for next year! Counting down the days until then....

We just had a weekend getaway to Hawk Valley and everything was perfect. The grounds were beautiful with the flowers in bloom. The pond was full of life with frogs, fish, and turtles. We caught a bunch of bass with some in the 3-4 lb range and lots more bluegills. The bird watching was great with blue herons, green herons, blue birds, hummingbirds, etc… It was amazing to sit on the deck and have the hummingbirds fly right next to you to get to the feeders. One night Jane, the innkeeper, helped us with a campfire down by the pond. Jane provided skewers so we had a cook-out. Breakfast each day was so wonderful my wife asked for the recipes. We went to Galena and Dubuque, IA for shopping, sightseeing and dining. We had a great time. But the highlight of the trip was Hawk Valley and its great hosts, Jane and Fritz. Thanks for making our weekend perfect.

Beautiful property! If you are looking for a relaxing, secluded spot, this is it! Set in the country it has beautiful landscaping, mature trees, and nice pond with picnic table and fire pit. We absolutely loved it! Jane was a wonderful hostess and made a very yummy breakfast (baked french toast). We are definitely coming back and will stay in one of the cottages!

We loved staying at the Somerset cottage in Hawk Valley, enjoying the awesome view of the valley from the deck. Accommodations were roomy yet cozy. We enjoyed the jacuzzi, the walks on the grounds, fishing, and the swing at the main house. Jane and Fritz are welcoming and wonderfully helpful. It is nice just to get away from the hubbub of the city and slow down the pace. Since it is outside of Galena, the stars are spectacular at night. The bonfires at night are great and the breakfasts are delicious!

We need a quick getaway for peace, quiet and relaxation. We found just the place. Our own little cottage on Jane's grounds. It couldn't have been better. It ended up to be just what we were looking for and more. Each morning Jane fixed us the most outstanding breakfast that we have had in a B and B in a long time. Everything was just wonderful and we are looking forward to our next visit. Remember to try "Fried Green Tomatoes" in town, it's the best dinner around. Way too much food. We did bring our own coffee and maker for the early riser, as there is only a four cup in the room. Other than that just perfect.

I started planning our first miny vacation just the two of us in over two years. I started looking at Galena and then I found Hawk Valley. I couldn't believe we could book a cottage for that price and the property sounded so beautiful. I wasn't sure my husband would be interested in it though, so I found a couple other hotels and B&B's for him to look at. He kept comparing everything to Hawk Valley. So I called Jane and booked the last available cottage for the days that we could get away. Then I got nervously excited - what if it wasn't as nice as it sounded, but yet I wanted to get there right away instead of waited the two weeks. Finally the time came and we dropped the boys off at my parents. Wow, what a gorgeous drive it was to Hawk Valley. We arrived early, so we spent time walking through the nature trails, enjoying the beautiful gardens, and walking around the pond. Our room was wonderful. My husband felt instantly comfortable in the Pines Cottage. He is a hunter and the hunting atmosphere of the cottage was perfect. We couldn't help but relax, the furniture was very comfortable. During our two night stay we also enjoyed the swing on the deck and admiring the fountain in the garden just off the edge of the deck. I even was able to complete a puzzle, something I haven't done in a long time. The breakfasts in the morning were delicious. I felt like we were in a restaurant. Jane is a great cook and is wonderful to talk with. I don't know how many times in the last three weeks since our stay, that my husband hasn't said, "Yep, we will definitely be going back to Hawk Valley" and I completely agree. Hawk Valley was exactly what we needed and we can't wait to go back.

I cannot say enough good things about this B&B! My (now) husband and I have stayed here three times in the last 4 years, the last stay being May 27th-31st 2009 for our recent wedding. The location is wonderful, Jane and Fritz (the owners) are friendly and helpful, and the breakfasts every morning are absolutely delicious. For our first two stays, my husband and I took advantage of their midweek special, and even ending up exending our stay one day during our 2008 vacation. For the wedding, Jane and Fritz couldn't have been more helpful. We had a perfect event, and we couldn't have done it without their help arranging and coordinating various things. This is a great place to stay for a romantic getaway, or when you need to unplug from city life for a while. It is a short (10-15 minute) drive to downtown Galena, so you really get the sense of quiet and isolation while still being able to easily get to shopping and dining. The evenings are best spend relaxing with a glass of wine on the private decks that are a part of every cabin and room, stargazing or just soaking in the calm. This is also a wonderful place for a small wedding (~30 people), I couldn't have picked a more picturesque setting!

Our recent stay at Hawk Valley retreat was a wonderful quick trip to celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary. The room was beautifully appointed, the welcome warm. We thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet, the lively conversations around the breakfast table with couples present for the same reason-wedding anniversary and reconnecting. We were able to explore the town, and every recommendation for eatery was right on the money. we had not had such good sleep in ages, so much so that we made a return reservation for the Octoberfest. We are definitely looking forward to enjoying Jane and Fritz's hospitality and the fall foliage. Who knows? might try our hand at some fishing too, along with horseback riding and shopping at the Galena Canning Company.

Our stay at the Hawk Valley Retreat & Cottages could have not been better. The accomodations were clean, private, and spacious. Everything in the room worked perfectly. The setting nestled in the valley was gorgeous and the grounds were maintained in immaculate fashion. The hiking trails were a nice touch as was the setup for birdwatching. We didn't see Fritz much but Jane was an excellent hostess and a gourmet cook. The breakfast meals were scrumptious and immensely gratifying. We look forward to a return trip to Galena and would not consider staying anywhere except Hawk Valley. Thanks for a wonderful and romantic experience. Jeff and Nancy

We stayed for 4 nights and were wishing for more. It is a gorgeous country setting among the hills and valleys outside of Galena. Only about a 10 minute drive back to town. Our cottage was comfortable and very clean. The jacuzzi was nice and large. We had a wonderful view of the surrounding area from our deck. The only sounds are birds and cows. There is a pond stocked with fish and poles to try and catch them. The breakfast is outstanding. Jane is a very good cook. She is the most gracious hostess and is filled with ideas to make your visit to Galena special. I can't wait to go back and spend some more time in this piece of heaven.

We stayed in the Hillside Cottage from July 18 - 21, 2008 and it was a perfect weekend. Their website photos do not do this cottage justice. It is very spacious and clean. Many BnBs have too much "stuff" that just collects dust. This cottage was quiet and had a nice deck with a beautiful view of the sunset. Jane and Fritz are wonderful hosts and invited us to the bonfire on Sunday night. They were there giving us each a sticks, marshmallows, chocolates, plates and napkins for our s'mores. What a delightful and perfect evening. The breakfasts are wonderful with incredible sausages, fresh fruit and a fresh-from-the-oven-pecan-rolls. I highly recommend this BnB. The drive from the BnB to downtown Galena is very scenic. Try to have dinner at both Fried Green Tomatoes and The Cove restaurant at Apple Canyon Lake. Sit on the deck at The Cove to watch the sunset on the lake because it is spectacular!!!

The pond area had wonderful options: catch n release, a sitting swing area to observe the beautiful spectrum of birds, and a sitting area for campfires. This is an outstanding bed and breakfast that we will never forget

Breathtaking. Refreshing. Peaceful. These are just a few of the words I would use to describe our stay at the Hawk Valley Cottage. We were there to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary on Fri and Sat nights. Fri eve we were served a pork tenderloin meal in our cottage by candlelight. Included in the meal package was a bottle of wine. The meal was quite tasty and the scenery was wonderfully romantic. Later that eve we ran the water in our whirlpool bathtub when we noticed a hot-air balloon in the sky. We watched it carefully as it headed our direction. We ran out to meet the crew of 12 as it landed within 20 yards of our cottage. What an exhilarating view and unique experience! Sat morn we were served a spectacular breakfast at the main house and then two massage therapists arrived at our cottage for a 60-min massage. So, so relaxing, need I say more... Afterwards we headed to Galena Cellars for some wine tasting, made our purchases and then sat out on their verandah for a lite lunch of cheese, crackers and, of course, a bottle of wine. The sky was blue and the countryside was breathtaking. We headed downtown Galena to enjoy the rest of our afternoon looking inside their unique shops and then went to our 5:30 dinner reservations. Upon arriving back to Hawk Valley that evening we caught up with the friends we made at breakfast that morning and sat on the main house deck for hours of countryside sounds (bullfrogs, hummingbirds, etc) and good conversation. The following morning we had another delightful breakfast at the main house before we checked out and headed for home. I would highly recommend a weekend at the Hawk Valley Retreat. We will be returning the following season as we want to experience each of the fours seasons at this resort. To experience the beauty and quietness would only be a vow to return to it. Enjoy!

A stay at Hawk Valley was just what our relationship needed! We had a gorgeous cottage to ourselves, complete with fireplace and whirlpool, that was set apart from the main house. The grounds are breathtaking and there is a stocked pond that we enjoyed hours of fishing at. Only minutes from Galena, we were able to enjoy the peace and quiet of a rural environment and then go into town for shopping, a trolley tour and dinner. Jane is very sweet, knowledgeable and makes amazing breakfast! This was a great place to help us relax, unwind and get to know each other again.

Jane was so friendly on the phone. She treated me kindly and assured me this was a very safe place for me and my partner. The seclusion and privacy was perfect while the hospitality was just enough. I was amazed at the variety of birds around. Binoculars were available along with bird books to make bird watching valuable. Jane & Fritz accommodated the vegetarian traveler with no problems. Jane is an excellent Galena travel guide. The other couples that were there were fabulous as well!

What a wonderful find. Truly a healing experience for mind, body and spirit. The cottage was so comfortable, we hated to leave for jaunts to Galena. Peaceful, quiet, private...was anyone else there? Hats off to the owners who clearly are not only sincere, welcoming hosts, but for their vision and dedication to providing this sanctuary for widlife and humans alike. The breakfast was perfect...satisfying in both taste and portion. I especially enjoyed the hot stone massage...right in our cottage..and by a skilled massage therapist! Wow. How perfectly relaxing. I will return...sometimes alone, sometimes with my partner... to recharge, restore and relax. I know I will be warmly welcomed, truly accepted and sincerely appreciated.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hawk Valley. The cottage and breakfast were very homey but yet a treat. Not too many B & B's that we have visited include a kitchenette with plates, silverware, utencils, plus microwave and mini fridge. The location was great. The cottage was very private. It was far enough away from Galena to be in the middle of nature yet close enough to be in town within 10 - 15 minutes. We loved your breakfasts and conversations. We'll be back!

My wife and I came to Hawk Valley Retreat with some friends this past February (08) to see eagles and we were not disappointed. Fritz and Jane Fuchs were so helpful in pointing out the best spots to go looking for eagles. Seeing these awesome birds for the first time was very special. But beyond the eagle-watching, Hawk Valley is full of nature. From the delicious breakfasts in the dining room with good company and birds feeding right outside the window to deer wandering over the road at sunset, to the namesake hawks wheeling in the sky overhead. If you want a quiet retreat from the world to enjoy nature and perhaps learn a little about it, Hawk Valley is for you. And Fritz and Jane will make you feel very comfortable.

I have stayed at Hawk Valley many times since it has opened, and I love every minute of it. There is never a dull moment while staying at this wonderful B&B. When I arrived the numerous times I have gone, the scenery takes my breath away and makes me very tranquil. The hospitality of the owners is above the rest around, from chatting in the morning over breakfast to the afternoon chats around the property. I have never seen two people love what they do so much like Mr. and Mrs. Fuchs. They bring something more to the table when you stay at Hawk Valley. If I had the choice, I would never leave.
