We loved our visit to Chestnut Street Inn. During the day we wandered around the area doing some antiquing (from Peru and Princeton out to Geneseo), and in the evening we enjoyed amazing food and a lovely fire in the Rosewood Suite. Breakfasts were healthy, hearty and delicious, and the dinner we had at the Inn was one of Monika's "chocolate-themed" dinners. We were astounded that this four-course meal, with chocolate in every course could have been so delicious (and not sweet). Even if you can't stay overnight, call for dinner reservations - you won't regret it! As to our hosts - Monika and Jeff were personable, gracious and friendly. We liked them very much and only wish that we'd had a little more time to chat with them. We definitely plan to return!

During our initial step into the entry of this beautiful home, Jeff greeted us with a cordial smile which made us immediately feel the warmth of the home. Monika was close behind, stepping away from a ladies luncheon she was serving in the sun room. She further enhanced our welcome. We were then shown our delightful room and the many other available services of the Inn. This transformed us from guests to family. Before our arrival we had selected our evening gourmet dinner from the Inn's extensive menu. Monika, who is a talented Chef, prepared the dinner. This dinner would have pleased the most sophisticated palate. The outstanding breakfast prepared by Monika was included in our room rate. When one is seeking tranquility, superb food and great hospitality look no further than The Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield, Illinois.

We felt completely at home and cared for at this wonderful inn, run by two energetic and gifted innkeepers. They strike a joyous balance of style (a meticulously restored Greek revival mansion, artfully presented, skillfully executed dinners w/French and North African influences) and comfort (plump pillows, plenty of towels and blankets, deep vintage tubs, and a feeling that it's ok to put your feet up on the sofas in the beautiful living room/library). Jeff and Monika are always available, but you don't often need them: they give you the run of the place, including a butler's pantry stocked with fine teas, fresh coffee and soft drinks, and they make sure things are at hand. Need a fresh baked macaroon, Irish cream brownie, or scone w/ your tea as you read in the library? They're right there on the sideboard. We stayed three days, and spent our afternoons biking the beautiful Hennepin Canal tow path, through landscapes little changed since Lincoln rode through here, then reading for pleasure and soaking in long hot baths, before repairing to the dining room for one of Monica's wonderful meals, which are influenced by her study of French cooking and culture, and her graduate study in Morocco and among its chefs. In addition, both Monica and Jeff are fun! Easy to be around, yet not intrusive. We plan to return often. The town of Sheffield is a bit down at the heels at the moment, but still quiet and rural and a good place to relax. Nearby Princeton is bustling and full of antique shops and eateries, although the best dining in the area is clearly at the Inn (which would be fine dining anywhere). A summer festival, civil war reenactments, antiquing, biking and hiking are all good reasons to come to Sheffield, but the best is simply to relax and unwind, which is easy and very pleasant to do at the Chestnut Street Inn.

From the time we pulled up to the house until we pulled away to continue our journey we experienced an exquisite banquet for the senses. We were warmly greeted by our host and escorted into the magnificent foyer decorated with an Moroccan influence. The unusual staircase beckoned us to tour the home and eventually our room for the night, the delightful maid's quarters. Monika and Jeff were quietly attentive to our every wish or whim. Warm and personable, they left us to enjoy their home but seemed to magically appear if needed. Snacks and drinks were everywhere you could wish for your pleasure, and the meals were delicious and different. Nowhere could one experience such hospitality, food and comfort for such a pitance.

Our hosts Monika and Jeff were wonderfully attentive without being intrusive. Monika's cooking is outstanding, blending the Hungarian influence of her grandmother with Morrocan cuisine from her days as an anthropology student and many other international flavors. The cheese souffles and apple-raspberry-blueberry bread at breakfast were heavenly, and the dinner the night before was scrumptious and imaginative. I would recommend this inn for the food alone. But the rooms were also lovely, furnished with antiques, but including the modern convenience of satellite television and internet access. Everything was in perfect order, clean and beautiful. Be sure to read the interesting history of the house and admire the three story spindle staircase. I hope I have a chance to return and luxuriate in the care of the innkeepers and the historical house.

This beautiful old house has been meticulously restored and the rooms are well-appointed with comfortable and tasteful furnishings. The decor is fancy but not fussy. We slept well in our soft canopy bed after enjoying a starry country sky you can never see back home in Chicago. The hosts were friendly and eager to do whatever they could to make our stay enjoyable, but they were not intrusive and allowed us space when we wanted it. The dinner they prepared for the other guests smelled wonderful, but we decided to explore another excellent restaurant in town that they recommended. They cooked a delicious breakfast at the early hour we requested the next morning and kept us company while we ate, telling stories about their interesting experiences. Ask Monika about Morroccan tea rituals. Her story will take you to far away places with fascinating ways. We look forward to returning in the near future.

All my household goods had been packed and put into storage that hectic Saturday (9/19/09). Exhausted, I drove to the 5 hours to Sheffield, not knowing what to expect. I found: beauty, rest, comfort, and most of all, 2 lovely, accommodating people. I didn't have reservations for dinner and didn't want much. Monika, a gourmet chef, made me the perfect supper. I spent 2 nights there - expecting to only spend one, and now that I've arrived in Colorado, I realize I owe my rejuvenated start to Monika and Jeff. Their intelligence and warmth shines through all they do. I could say so much more about my experience, and I realize that anyone would feel as I did: that I was seen as a real person, not just another guest, but as a fellow human being. Lovely people, marvelous place.

Sheffield is a picturebook small town with sleepy streets, generous lawns and beautiful old houses. Of these, the Chestnut Street Inn is the best. Rooms are large, luxurious and comfortable. My husband and I were looking for the perfect "Eden" to hold our private wedding ceremony. We found the Chestnut Street Inn and everything seemed to fall into place after that. Monika took the time to sit down and plan out the entire evening with me. Between countless e-mails she created an exquisite menu for the adults and a separate menu for the children. She even made a special vegan dish for a family member! Never once did I hear them tell me they "couldn't" do something or that what I wanted was unable to happen. They opened their entire Inn to us by allowing us use of their backyard for the ceremony, and the entire downstairs for the reception. They managed to be there when we needed something, yet at the same time giving us the privacy we appreciated. Our room was a perfect hideaway for the new Mr. & Mrs.!! We will definitely be back for a return visit, to enjoy the beauty and the company. Monika and Jeff found their niche in life and that is the Chestnut Street Inn.

My wife and I stayed for a Tuesday nite in June while traveling to our wedding. The inn was in a nice rural location, the rooms were antique-y without being annoyingly "quaint" (in other words, everything worked great), the inkeepers were really fantastic at service (very usefully helpful and great at thoughtful extras like a wonderfully stocked refreshment pantry), the common areas were stocked with some great reading books and magazines and other stuff, the house was really comfortable with interesting architecture, and finally the creativity (unusual but thoughtful ingredients) and the quality of our three-course breakfast was REALLY fantastic. My newlywed wife said it was the best B&B breakfast she has ever had. It was a great value.

We've stayed at quite a few B&Bs, but Chestnut Street Inn is our favorite by far. As soon as you walk in the door, you immediately feel relaxed. Monika and Jeff are warm and welcoming, and make you feel right at home. The rooms are incredibly clean and comfortable, but you don't want to miss relaxing in the beautiful living room with wall-to-wall bookcases, spending time in the gorgeous sunroom, or wandering the garden. The two factors that make this our favorite B&B are spending time talking with Jeff and Monika -- who are both fascinating people with many interesting stories to share -- and eating Monika's incredible food -- she truly has a gift. Breakfast is always delicious, but having dinner there is a special treat and always a highlight of our stay. We highly recommend Moroccan night. Sheffield is a small town, so you do have to drive to find things to do, but since we go there to get away from it all, that's never been an issue. We've spent our anniversary here for the last several years, and we look forward to next year. Thank you, Monika and Jeff, for a consistently outstanding experience. K&B

While on a business trip from France to the USA, we had the pleasure of spending a night at the Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield! We were really blown away by the B&B, the people, and of course the FOOD!! The house is a very large, fully renovated property. It has really big rooms, and the entire house is extremely comfortable. I would jump at the chance to stay there for weeks on end if I ever got the chance. Monika and Jeff are both really warm, attentive, and genuinely interesting people who grew tired of corporate life and wanted to get away from it all. This B&B is the realization of a dream for them, and they show it in the passion with which they spoil their guests! This review would not be complete without mentioning the glorious food prepared by Monika. Monika has studied culinary arts internationally for many years. We live in Paris, so our expectations of food are rather high! Let's just say that anyone would be hard-pressed to find this quality of food in a big city like Chicago or New York, so to find it in a small B&B in a small town like Sheffield is a true surprise to any traveler! I would encourage anyone to literally go out of their way when traveling in Illinois in order to go through Sheffield and either dine and/or sleep at the Chestnut Street Inn!

I've stayed at a dozen or more B&B's, and this one is the best so far. The town of Sheffield is easy to get to and charming. The Inn itself is beautiful, inside and out, with lovely gardens. Monika and Jeff have done many things, small and large, to make this place feel welcoming. The cooking is outstanding. The rooms are immaculate. Every room has its own bath. My sister and I stayed in the Maids Quarters which were perfect for us with 2 twin beds and a private sitting porch with tv and over 800 dvd/video's available to watch. We talked with our hosts at length and found them charming and informed. At http://www.fermatainc.com/il/trail_1.html we obtained many ideas of things to do. We had such a ball driving the back roads to many places (history at Bishop Hill, parks to hike in, a winery, a historic canal, flower nurseries, etc) that we will be back soon to do this again. And the prices are very fair for such luxury. Do try this place, you won't be sorry.

I can't say enough about the deliciousness of the cuisine (Monika is extremely gifted!); the warmth/friendliness of the hosts; the beauty of the house and grounds; and the cleanliness of every aspect of the inn. I highly recommend staying here! If you go, don't forget to hike the Hennepin Canal a few miles outside of town.

We have stayed at the Chestnut St. Inn a few times now and they have all been enjoyable. The Inn is extremely clean and we have always felt at home. Jeff always has wonderful stories about the history of the Inn and the town of Sheffield. Monika is a wonderful chef (self taught). When we stay we always plan to stay for dinner because no matter what cuisine she cooks it is always fabulous. And certainly her breakfasts are just as good. These two young hosts are truly the best. We look forward to our next visit.

The Chestnut Street Inn is located in the small, quiet, and attractive community of Sheffield, IL. The Inn is an historic home that has been faithfully restored and tastefully decorated without being overdone. Rooms are very comfortable and cheerfully decorated. Innkeepers Jeff and Monika have a particular interest and talent for cooking. Meals are superb, interesting, delightful, and memorable. Perhaps the finest ornaments the Inn possesses are its Innkeepers who, without ceremony or artifice, make you feel that you are the only guest at the Inn and that they have been just waiting to meet you! You will find it difficult to leave The Chestnut Street Inn and sensible to return when you can. Craig Johnson

We stayed two nights for our anniversary, and had dinner there one night. The food was exceptionally good, and we also enjoyed being able to have time together in a quiet small-town setting. We enjoyed day trips to the Hennepin Canal, Hegeler Carus house and Ronald Reagan homes in Tampico and Dixon. Many thanks to the Sudokovs for making our anniversary special and memorable!

The Chestnut Street Inn is a beautiful place that is appointed for comfort and luxury at a very attractive price. The rooms have lovely furniture, delightful cotton bedding, clean pleasant bathrooms, and cable TV plus a huge movie selection. The breakfasts are hearty and delish and the service is like being spoiled by wonderful relatives. If you book for dinner Monika, a trained chef will provide you with a four course meal you will never forget at a price that will make you smile. Everything is homemade from the bread and soup, right on to the dessert. Can you say creme brulee to die for? Keith and I have been back four times and always come away refreshed and renewed and dreaming of Monika's food. Two days with the Sudakovs gives us a new lease on life! Go for it! It is a pleasure to see two relatively young people working hard to provide a quality experience for their guests! From the bowls of snack individually wrapped chocolates, to the guest pantry for midnight noshes for free, to the beautifully refurbished turn of the 20th Century guest suites (including two small maid's quarters that would be a total blast for kids along for the trip or that extra relative along for the trip), to a quiet locale 2 hours or so from Chicago and just off I-80 and less than an hour North of Peoria and a skip over from the Quad Cities, to a gourmet repaste that will knock your eyes out onto the plate served as a four-course meal,. the whole experience was a welcome respite from daily cares on a coolish March day waiting for Spring to arrive. The only problem was that there were only actually 4 to 5 guest "suites" to be let in the high tourist season. But a bang for your buck is hardly ever found these days, especially one that is a refreshing alternative to the usual chain hotels that charge as much or far more. It was a supererlative experience in every possible way. There ought to be a catergory beyound "good, better, or best", because this one would qualify.

Everything about our stay at Chestnut Street Inn was exceptional. The Inn is tastefully decorated, very comfortable and inviting. Jeff and Monika were energetic and happy to share information and history of the Inn and about the area. We loved hearing about their interesting backgrounds. Breakfast on both morning was fantastic. Monika's cooking is a highlight for anyone staying here. We also enjoyed a gourmet evening meal in the private dining room in our suite. The location is centrally located and a short drive to Bishop Hill, Peoria or The Quad Cities. We hope to have the chance to return and try another one of the rooms.

We drove into Sheffield and arrived at the Chestnut Street Inn on a dark and rainy evening and was welcomed by Jeff at the door. My adult daughter and I were in the maid quarters which reminded her of her doll house that her father built. A dream any young girl has to stay in room that was warm, beautiful and decorated to the period the house was built. Being a business woman she was able to log in and send the emails and her projects to the people that needed to receive them before morning. The breakfast the following morning was four start, the yogurt had a special flavor and the coffee was great. In fact we order coffee from Monika for home use. The aroma brings back the great memory of our stay in the Inn.

The previous owner of this charming little mansion restored it impeccably. The new owners have added some exotic touches, especially to the menu. Monika is an accomplished young cook. We've been coming to the Chestnut Street Inn for years, even before Jeff and Monika became the Innkeepers, and we've always enjoyed it...but I have to say that since they have taken it over everything has gotten even better! They are so very friendly and engaging, while also respectful of your space to relax. Their meals are absolutely delicious and they offer so many interesting options for dinner. This was our first experience at a B&B and Monika and Jeff, the innkeepers, made it a wonderful memory for us. Their hospitality was above and beyond our expectations. Not only did we get a wonderful breakfast in the morning, they offered snacks & beverages throughout the day and evening. They also gave us the option for an additional charge to have a gourmet meal in the evening cooked by Monika who is an excellent chef with an international repertoire. She is also responsible for cooking the large, filling, flavorful breakfast every morning that is served by Jeff. The facilities and rooms were wonderful and clean with modern amenities. The Victorian style decor made us feel like we were in the late 19th / early 20th century. If you are looking for a quick getaway where you can either get some R&R or stay while you visit Small Town America, then stay at the Chestnut Street Inn. They even have high speed wireless internet so you can stay in touch if you need to. My wife and I highly recommend them!
