We felt completely at home and cared for at this wonderful inn, run by two energetic and gifted innkeepers. They strike a joyous balance of style (a meticulously restored Greek revival mansion, artfully presented, skillfully executed dinners w/French and North African influences) and comfort (plump pillows, plenty of towels and blankets, deep vintage tubs, and a feeling that it's ok to put your feet up on the sofas in the beautiful living room/library). Jeff and Monika are always available, but you don't often need them: they give you the run of the place, including a butler's pantry stocked with fine teas, fresh coffee and soft drinks, and they make sure things are at hand. Need a fresh baked macaroon, Irish cream brownie, or scone w/ your tea as you read in the library? They're right there on the sideboard. We stayed three days, and spent our afternoons biking the beautiful Hennepin Canal tow path, through landscapes little changed since Lincoln rode through here, then reading for pleasure and soaking in long hot baths, before repairing to the dining room for one of Monica's wonderful meals, which are influenced by her study of French cooking and culture, and her graduate study in Morocco and among its chefs. In addition, both Monica and Jeff are fun! Easy to be around, yet not intrusive.
We plan to return often. The town of Sheffield is a bit down at the heels at the moment, but still quiet and rural and a good place to relax. Nearby Princeton is bustling and full of antique shops and eateries, although the best dining in the area is clearly at the Inn (which would be fine dining anywhere). A summer festival, civil war reenactments, antiquing, biking and hiking are all good reasons to come to Sheffield, but the best is simply to relax and unwind, which is easy and very pleasant to do at the Chestnut Street Inn. All my household goods had been packed and put into storage that hectic Saturday (9/19/09). Exhausted, I drove to the 5 hours to Sheffield, not knowing what to expect. I found: beauty, rest, comfort, and most of all, 2 lovely, accommodating people. I didn't have reservations for dinner and didn't want much. Monika, a gourmet chef, made me the perfect supper. I spent 2 nights there - expecting to only spend one, and now that I've arrived in Colorado, I realize I owe my rejuvenated start to Monika and Jeff. Their intelligence and warmth shines through all they do. I could say so much more about my experience, and I realize that anyone would feel as I did: that I was seen as a real person, not just another guest, but as a fellow human being. Lovely people, marvelous place. View Reviewer Info

We've stayed at quite a few B&Bs, but Chestnut Street Inn is our favorite by far. As soon as you walk in the door, you immediately feel relaxed. Monika and Jeff are warm and welcoming, and make you feel right at home. The rooms are incredibly clean and comfortable, but you don't want to miss relaxing in the beautiful living room with wall-to-wall bookcases, spending time in the gorgeous sunroom, or wandering the garden. The two factors that make this our favorite B&B are spending time talking with Jeff and Monika -- who are both fascinating people with many interesting stories to share -- and eating Monika's incredible food -- she truly has a gift. Breakfast is always delicious, but having dinner there is a special treat and always a highlight of our stay. We highly recommend Moroccan night. Sheffield is a small town, so you do have to drive to find things to do, but since we go there to get away from it all, that's never been an issue. We've spent our anniversary here for the last several years, and we look forward to next year. Thank you, Monika and Jeff, for a consistently outstanding experience. K&B View Reviewer Info

While on a business trip from France to the USA, we had the pleasure of spending a night at the Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield!
We were really blown away by the B&B, the people, and of course the FOOD!!
The house is a very large, fully renovated property. It has really big rooms, and the entire house is extremely comfortable. I would jump at the chance to stay there for weeks on end if I ever got the chance.
Monika and Jeff are both really warm, attentive, and genuinely interesting people who grew tired of corporate life and wanted to get away from it all. This B&B is the realization of a dream for them, and they show it in the passion with which they spoil their guests!
This review would not be complete without mentioning the glorious food prepared by Monika. Monika has studied culinary arts internationally for many years. We live in Paris, so our expectations of food are rather high! Let's just say that anyone would be hard-pressed to find this quality of food in a big city like Chicago or New York, so to find it in a small B&B in a small town like Sheffield is a true surprise to any traveler!
I would encourage anyone to literally go out of their way when traveling in Illinois in order to go through Sheffield and either dine and/or sleep at the Chestnut Street Inn!

I've stayed at a dozen or more B&B's, and this one is the best so far. The town of Sheffield is easy to get to and charming. The Inn itself is beautiful, inside and out, with lovely gardens. Monika and Jeff have done many things, small and large, to make this place feel welcoming. The cooking is outstanding. The rooms are immaculate. Every room has its own bath. My sister and I stayed in the Maids Quarters which were perfect for us with 2 twin beds and a private sitting porch with tv and over 800 dvd/video's available to watch. We talked with our hosts at length and found them charming and informed. At http://www.fermatainc.com/il/trail_1.html we obtained many ideas of things to do. We had such a ball driving the back roads to many places (history at Bishop Hill, parks to hike in, a winery, a historic canal, flower nurseries, etc) that we will be back soon to do this again. And the prices are very fair for such luxury. Do try this place, you won't be sorry. View Reviewer Info
