I had to attend a conference during late october early november 2008. In my early 50's, I did not want a typical conference hotel experience, with huge impersonal lobby and anonymous rooms. I'd enjoyed bed and breakfast experiences previously. I searched this website for philadelphia area b&bs. I reviewed several before settling on the gables. The reviews were great. Prices were comparable to hotel rates. After emailing my interest, I received a friendly call the next day indicating the room (the garden room) was available. I arrived saturday afternoon and was warmly greeted by the staff. The house was well appointed. After providing credit cards for payment, I received a key and information about breakfast and snacks available anytime. Computers and internet access were available (as is free wi-fi). There’s also a nice selection of dvds, videotapes, books and magazines. I was escorted to the second floor. The garden room was warmly appointed, high ceilings, and peaceful. The #13 trolley can be caught at the corner. It provides good affordable access to downtown philadelphia. Breakfast included a nice variety of cold cereals, freshly baked pumpkin bread, a fresh quiche, fruit salad, tasty sausages, and fruit juices, teas, and coffee.
The next time i stay at the gables, i'll ask for a room with a king size bed. The mattress was a double and I had to lay diagonally across the mattress for a comfortable rest. The room descriptions might include information on size of beds (e.g. doubles, king, queen size). I'll also ask for a room with a bathtub. The shower was nice, but i was a bit concerned that there was no safety rail or safety strips on the shower floor. I discovered the first nippy night that the radiators were more decorative than functional. However, all rooms had electric space heaters, and my second night was toasty and just right. My room had a small 17" TV that was okay, but barely. I would definitely recommend the Gables.
