Not being a seasoned B&B traveler I'll admit to a measure of naïveté, but my gut tells me that Maxwell House is a treasure.
Robust and comfortable with its age, the house sits in a neighborhood of classics. Mount Airy has embraced its role as “Mayberry” and the House is within an easy stroll of instant nostalgia.
Our primary purpose for visiting was North Carolina's young wine country and many wineries are within an easy drive.
Twyla Sickmiller proved to be a valuable resource for choosing which we would visit as well as being a gracious, eager and impeccable hostess.
We stayed in Elizabeth's Room, ample and inviting in its Victorian elegance with a king-sized bed. The bath, too, was of sufficient size with a whirlpool tub for two.
We were never disturbed and enjoyed the room and its amenities. The two-course breakfasts were tasty and sumptuous -- way more than we'd normally eat but far too special to ignore. Before striking out on our tour, Twyla provided us with directions to four wineries within an easy drive, packed some bottled water and trail mix and offered a coupon for dinner at a fifth.
I'm told that many B&B regulars prefer their hosts to blend into the walls or be more like part of the furniture. Twyla knows that and can be, but it's not her nature and Maxwell House is better for it. She and husband Roger are a perfect team and they made our stay memorable. She's bright, funny, engaging and warm and loves to sit with the guests during breakfast and stoke conversation.
My wife and I are already looking ahead at our schedules to determine when we can visit again. In the meantime, make Maxwell House your destination if you’re planning to visit Mayberry, want to taste the North Carolina wine country or you’re just looking to escape for a couple of days.
But know this. You’re cheating yourself if you don’t take the time to visit with your hosts.
