We were driving up the coast of California and we decided to stay overnight in Eureka. We spotted a quaint Victorian called Daly Inn and stopped to see if they could accommodate us – without a reservation. The Garden Suite was available and after seeing it we took it immediately. After some wine and pleasant talk we went to our room. We were met by a well decorated three room suite overlooking the garden. How quaint: a room’s name that really means something. The suite had every amenity that one would like to find in a B & B. The next morning, during a marvelous breakfast, prepared by hostess Donna Gafford and served by co-owner Bob Gafford, we discussed the availability of things to do locally. After hearing about the guided wine tour, we opted for an additional day’s stay so we could visit three local wineries. The trip was to an appellation that we’d never heard of before – Willow Creek. It is situated in The Trinity Alps. The appellation was established in 1947 but has remained untouched by the hoards. The trip was well worth the time and cost. At each winery, we were met by the owner/winemaker. Donna had packed a great lunch for us and the winemaker and his wife, which we enjoyed at the second winery. The three wineries, in order of visit were: Sentinel Winery; Winette Vineyards and Dogwood Estate Winery. All three had full offerings of varietals and blends. At Sentinel and Dogwood we bought their reds and at Winette we bought some whites. The Daly Inn is a Victorian that is over one hundred years old, but is in excellent shape. The décor is very well done and is the handy work of Donna Gafford. Donna and Bob are very gracious hosts that are very helpful with explaining the local sights and offering their knowledge of local restaurants. They also own and operate the Iris Inn across the street. We were given a tour of that operation which is also beautifully decorated.

We walked in to the front door of the Cornelius Daly Inn and were welcomed by friendly staff. The inn is elegantly decorated right down to the smallest detail. Late afternoon wine and hors d'oeuvres are a real treat. The food is delicious and the service impeccable. We definitely recommend this B&B if you are looking for a special place to stay!

We live in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, about 6.5 hours by car from Eureka. Though we are happy with Oregon, we like to get away from time to time. The Cornelius Daly Inn, booked for a weekend in late January, 2009, turned out to be the right place for us. The website was attractive, but the main house, and the auxiliary house (a fine place in its own right) across the street, exceeded our expectations. Eureka is a good destination, with the redwoods, the rugged coastline and the finer tastes that Bay Area money can bring (quirky bookstores with unusual books, good restaurants), available in a leisurely and uncrowded setting. Our hosts, Donna and Bob, gave us attentive care without impinging on our romantic getaway - complete with a fine suite and fireplace. We would recommend the Cornelius Daly Inn to anyone who appreciates the timber-era understated elegance of the Pacific Northwest.
