Mast Farm Inn
The Mast Farm Inn is more than a bed and breakfast, with inn rooms, private getaway cottages, fine dining and great wines, organic gardens, and unique gifts completing our historic country appeal. The key to the Inn’s success, however,... more

We are sincerely sorry your stay did not match your expectations of value in terms of the 2 reasons you describe. We are glad that you found The food excellent and the inn beautiful. ~ For the dust: I have to say I am surprised by the cleanliness comment because that is the single most important factor to us here. We have a lot of procedures in place to assure cleanliness. Among which, we vacuum the floor after sweeping, and after housekeeping has finished the room, every single day, we have a person whose sole job here is to inspect for cleanliness and prep the room with flowers, water, cookies, snacks, etc... Our sanitation score for the Inn is exceptionally high at 96.5 and for the restaurant 100. Something may have happened and we can only apologize and wish you had brought the matter to our attention at that time. You can see in many of the reviews here very high marks for cleanliness, although significantly more challenging in a Historic Register property ~ For the bed: You are right and that was the result of a mix-up as some guests request the two mattress arrangement, and we will be changing things back to the way they are supposed to be. We would have changed then and there had we known ~ Overall value: I stayed at a hotel recently where Internet was $17.26 a day, parking $27.41, very plain minimal breakfast $70 a day for two, and small bottle of water in the room was $5. That is $117.41 a day in tack-ons. And this was in a regular American city not Manhattan. On Veterans Day Weekend, you paid $219 a day all included. People tend to forget all that is included in B&B rates when compared to hotels rates. Here, all and much more, such as all the soft drinks, coffee, tea, homemade cookies, and snacks, are free, including a Champagne reception with food, and live music if you book on weekends where rates are slightly higher than weekdays. I am not saying this is your case but it is important people compare apples to apples. Again our apologies.

I just wanted to drop a note and tell you how much we enjoyed staying at The Inn this weekend. The absence of the phone, cable, internet and most of the cell phone service, was so refreshing. I've experienced this many times before on camping trips (which I dearly love) but to have the girls around and them be happy campers was so much more better. It was an eye opening experience to these modern day distractions, that we sometimes call necessities (though they aren't really) and how they take precious time away from us to interact with those things of life that we should cherish the most, our family.
The food was superb and the service as well. Your staff spoke very highly of having the opportunity to work for such a wonderful family as yours.
It was very good to get to share time with your family, getting to meet Sandra, Danielle and Marie, and seeing the love and devotion to service and happiness they afford the guests of your home.
Thanks again for helping me to spend one of the best weekends with my family that I have had so far, to this point in life. I know it won't be the last one that we spend together at your place. We'll have to do it again.
Take care and God bless you all,

Dear Mike, We cannot thank you enough for the very kind words of encouragement and support. Many things we do and don't do sometimes go unnoticed. So it is truly heart warming to receive a review such as this.

Thank you so very much for such an articulate and detailed review. Guests such as you make this profession a real pleasure, and as 5 members of our family work here full time it is also very gratifying and encouraging. Thanks again.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a clear review. Hearing things from previous guests is much more important than anything we could have to say, and it enables people to determine for themselves if we are a good fit for their plans. Thanks.

Thank you. The Blacksmith shop is indeed a wonderful place to stay for 3 days. You can feel the layers of tension peeling off after about 15 minutes there. We greatly appreciate your very kinds words. Thanks again.

While the Mast Farm Inn had lots of nice qualities, my biggest issue was their
failure to advise their customers to avoid the road between Banner Elk and their
Inn. The dirt road is loaded with hairpin turns on a rapidly declining slope.
Coupled with the long drive to the Inn, a rainy night and thick fog it was
particularly treacherous. It is enough to ruin anybody's vacation by itself.
Then when we got there we were really ready for a nice meal. There are no
restaurants anywhere near the Mast Farm Inn, so we called the number they left
us for inquiries. The home number was answered by their maid and she could not
help us at all. The cell number they left for us was the wrong number! We had
to drive all the way back to Banner Elk to get dinner. Fortunately, our waiter
there was able to give us an alternate route back tot he Mast Farm Inn. It was
longer, but a much better drive. The waiter told us that the road between
Banner Elk and the Mast Farm Inn is treacherous on a bright and sunny day, so he
was very sympathetic to our situation. The people at the Mast Farm Inn could
have spared us the pain, but failed to do so.
I will also mention that there is a single step after you come down the stairs
from the third floor that is poorly marked. There is no effort to people aware
of the step. I stumbled on the step and my wife fell down completely. The
woman who helped my wife up stated that she had tripped in her bedroom as well.
Finally, the owner of the B&B proudly sports seven of his nine Porsche's out by
the barn. If someone is headed to the mountains to enjoy the simpler life, this
pretentious display of excess will do nothing to enhance the rusticity of the
mountains. It was disgusting. He even has a Porsche golf cart for show.
Our rooms were $250 a night. For that money, I would expect a higher level of
consideration of the guest's experience. View Reviewer Info

The roads to here are all paved. It seems you took a wrong turn and ended up on a dirt road thinking that was the only way here. All three primary accesses to the Inn: Broadstone, NC105 and NC194 are fully paved the entire way.
There are 50 plus restaurants within a 8 mile radius; and we have a complete list with descriptions at the front desk. You received an email questionnaire 7-10 days prior to arrival which asked if we could help you with anything, including dinner reservations.
The phone numbers are printed, on display several places, and all are correct. It's possible you dialed a wrong number. At home it's also possible a nanny answered but 95% of the time someone is home as 5 of us live on the same property. In fact if you are who we think you are, my wife answered the phone. As she has a French accent perhaps you thought she was hispanic, hence the maid.
There is no owner here, there are five. The Porches are not the owner's, nor belong to any of the owners, but to a fleet-sharing club located across the street at the barn. The Porsche Golf cart you speak of is no such thing, but an street-legal electric car made by Chrysler that we use; as we live 500 yards down the road this cuts down on wasted gas going back and forth, eliminates emissions, and hopefully demonstrates that electric vehicles can be of practical use.
The reviews here and elsewhere speak eloquently of the very highest quality of our personal assistance and services.
While we regret you stay started off on a bad foot due to a wrong turn and fog, and seemed to remain fixed in that state of discontent, we can only help if we know there is a problem. We ask guests almost every time we see them how everything is going and if they need any help.
We work hard to provide the very highest quality available anywhere and feel your review is not an accurate portrayal or characterization of our efforts.

My husband and I celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary at the Mast Farm Inn. It was our first weekend getaway in over seven years, and our first stay at a B&B. Our expectations were extremely high, and The Mast Farm Inn exceeded them by a mile. The inn is located in a most idyllic spot. I was charmed by the Victorian architecture of the inn, and the beautiful old trees, patches of wildflowers, and mountain views that surround it. My husband was charmed by the nearby line of porsches, available for daily rentals through the inn. Upon arrival, we were upgraded (at no charge) to one of the inn’s cabins for our weekend stay. It allowed us exceptional privacy, and we were very comfortable in this cozy, rustic cabin. We enjoyed one dinner and two breakfasts during our stay. The food was plentiful, filling, and scrumptious. Most impressive was the chef’s conscientious effort to accommodate my severe allergy to nuts. She prepared my food separately and provided me with alternative dishes, when necessary. All of the staff at the Mast Farm Inn treated us just as well. They informed of us nearby outdoor activities to our liking and entertained us in the evenings with pleasant conversations on the inn’s wrap-around porch. View Reviewer Info

Many of the reviews here speak of our natural generosity, and the great care we take in all things big and small. We hope you will read beyond here to other reviews which are a significantly more accurate reflection of our services and dedication.
Dear Sadly Dissapointed, We have socials on weekends where we offer guests champagne, snacks, appetizers, often have live music etc... If a guest wants wine from the bar at other times it is room service and billed as we do not run an open bar for the inn guests. You had water and ice in your room, and there are always fresh baked items near the front desk.
When you arrived, you did not have a reservation, as such nothing was prepared for your arrival. One of us is always here from 6AM-10PM 7 Days a Week. We had a family reunion to celebrate our son’s birth and baptism, knew that we would not present, and advised you of this before you checked-in. Because of that, and because you indicated you wanted a bargain, we offered you, at check-in, a 30% discount on our least expensive room and then offered you for that 30% discounted rate a free upgrade to any room; including the most expensive one at twice the price, which you selected. You paid $135 which included breakfast for two for a $259 room, yet you sent us a letter asking for a full refund.
When you called about the bat, My husband & I were at the family gathering 30 minutes away. We sent someone who arrived in less than 10 minutes, and we left our reunion to arrive within 30 minutes. We heard the bat in the hall bathroom, removed it, saw your lights off and thought it best not to disturb you because we thought you were sleeping.
While in the course of visiting anywhere something can go wrong, it is usually one thing; when we see a litany of complaints and a guest requests a full refund, in a context such as this, we do not provide one.

My husband and I, along with our ten year old son, stayed at the Mast Farm Inn the weekend of February 8, 2008. We were in desperate need of some time away from our normal schedules and routines. The service, food, and accomodations at the Mast Farm Inn were absolutely delightful, and we will definitely return. We live in Charlotte, and our stay at Mast Farm was like taking a step back in time, but with every comfort of home--minus the TV and computer. We were originally booked in the Blacksmith Shop, but were upgraded to the Granary, a larger cottage. Since we were traveling with our son, it was great to have the additional space, common area, and privacy. We had dinner at the inn on Friday night, and although the meal was not inexpensive, the food was fresh and very well prepared. It put me in mind of a wonderful home cooked meal. The inn also has a really good selection of beer and wine. The atmosphere and service at dinner were also delightful. The breakfasts at the inn was just as good. The food was excellent, and the breakfasts were substantial enough to hold us though the entire day. Without being asked, our server made some adjustments to our son's breakfasts that she thought he would appreciate--and sure enough, she got it right on the money. View Reviewer Info
