The Abbey is a wonderful, Victorian Gothic mansion. All of the rooms aare filled with period furniture and decor. You can spend hours looking at the items in the sitting areas on the first floor. Incredible. I have stayed there twice, and intend to do so in the future. The charming nature and quiet ambiance of The Abbey sets it apart from other bed and breakfasts. I think the fact that some of the age shows adds to the charm. If you want a boring motel room, go somewhere else. The inkeeper, Jay, is certainly NOT boring. He joins guests for breakfast and tea time, and chats with all of the guests in a warm, engaging, and funny manner. He is very knowledgable about history and has a good story for any occasion. Chatting with him is alone worth the price of admission. And the food is wonderful, very tasty. The Abbey is located right down the street from the beach and a couple minutes away from the main shopping area. Great location. I'd advise anyone who wants to have a quaint and relaxing time with good conversation to come here.

"An Authentic Victorian B&B" 8/23/2009

The Abbey is a functioning museum of a house that vactioners to Cape May can be lucky enough to call their own residence for a few short days. Everything at The Abbey is authentically Victorian (with the exception of window air conditioners in some rooms during the warmer season, mini-refrigerators, and, obviously, electricity). If you chose to stay here, and you should, you will feel as if you've stepped back 140 years to when the McCreary family made it their summer home. To me, this is what a "true" B&B experience is all about, and a realistic grounding will therefore require no adjustment of expectations after arrival. The dining room and parlors are so fabulously decorated that they have been featured in books devoted to the architecture and interiors of the Victorian era. And yes, the furniture and fixtures in your own quarters will be of the same period, i.e., antique. My room, The San Francisco, featured a stunning bed and wardrobe, as well as a charming sitting area and writing desk. The window air conditioning unit was more than sufficient to keep this large space temperate, even with 90+ degree days. As to breakfast, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my fellow guests over the varied home-cooked fare, and there is nothing more pleasant for afternoon refreshments than a cool glass of white wine (or lemonade, or iced tea) and some cheese and crackers or cake, all indulged in from a front porch rocking chair with a view of horse drawn carriages. Jay the innkeeper is constantly entertaining, but those suffering from mild or severe forms of humor impairment may not be able to tell when he's joking. The location of The Abbey simply cannot be beat: one block from the ocean, and only two blocks from the shops and restaurants at the Washington Street Mall, as well as several of the other premiere Cape May eateries. I will be booking my next trip very soon, and advise you to do the same!

We had a wonderful two night stay at the Abbey. Jay and the staff are very accommodating and are a wealth of knowledge about the area and history. There are dozens of antiques in both the rooms and common areas. Breakfasts were wonderful and plentiful. We had a enjoyable stay.

Have stayed at several different B&Bs in Cape May in the past. This one was not nearly as nice. The exterior and grounds were not maintained! Chipped and peeling paint, damaged and worn porch furniture, excess clutter, no flowers on the grounds or in containers, torn screens. While the building is historic and filled with many antiques the common areas felt cluttered with too much of it and they were closed off to guests before 10pm each night leaving us no where to sit except the shabby porch.

We escaped to Cape May for an extended weekend and had such a lovely time. Staying at The Abbey was a wonderful experience. Jay was quite entertaining every morning at breakfast, and he was great about getting everyone involved in the conversation. We were around in the afternoon once for refreshments which we took on the porch as we were reading. We would definitely return to The Abbey.

Hi, I stayed at the Abbey this past May and it is a very gothic Victorian bed and breakfast, you really feel like you are back in time. It is very close to the beach and the mall which is convenient, as is the on-site parking. Also, the breakfast and afternoon tea are nice perks, and if you like cats there are several friendly ones roaming the property which adds a nice touch to this quaint seaside bed and breakfast.

What a great time. The true spirit of a B&B. Yes the building is old and lacks the amenities of a modern day luxury hotel but everything is in working order and the inn is very clean. The innkeeper is great. He makes it a point to interact with the guests. Whether it is seeking dinner advice during afternoon tea (during which wine and cheese is provided) or getting a history lesson on the town of Cape May Jay is always smiling and always friendly. This inn has a great location. It is located a block from the beach, it is a very short walk to the mall and most restaurants.

We stayed at the Abbey for the winter Christmas lights. I have to admit it was very well located. But we only saw the proprietors once and that was to let us in. I did not feel very welcome even though it was a during one of Cape Mays holiday attractions .

The Abbey was the best B&B we have stayed at in a long time. Jay was very friendly and a delight to sit and just have a conversation with. Jay sat at the breakfast table and talked with all the guests, including all in the conversation. Food was great and Tea Time with the other guests and Jay was good. Got to compare notes on where to eat. Rooms were clean and very comfortable. Everything is in walking distance and the whole town makes you feel like you are in a Norman Rockwell painting.

Besides the nice rooms and 140 yrs history of Abbey House, the breakfast time is certainly the hightlights of the day listening to the stories of the guests who are mostly Jay's long time friends from all over the country.

Location, location, location. We, the girls, camped on the delightful porch and watched frequent horse drawn carriages and a parade of interesting people passing by. One block to shopping, one block to the ocean and on the corner of a delightful row of Victorian cottages. I do wish our bathroom was air conditioned, but we got by with it. Breakfast was quite delightful and tasty. Cape May is the best and this B and B has lots of charm!

This was not our first visit to Cape May but it was our first to The Abbey. It was also the best time we've had in a while! The owner, Jay Schatz, made us feel very welcome and the Inn is full of history and wonderful antiques! Jay's hat collection is among the best I've seen. The Inn was comfortable and the rooms lovely. Breakfast was delicious and we enjoyed having afternoon tea on the porch. We'll definately return!

My girlfriend(Debi) and I(David)wanted a getaway weekend for some rest and relaxation. The Abbey was more than adequate to provide all of that. The very clean and comfortable room and the great breakfasts and tea time was so enjoyable with the host(Jay)and all of his "true" stories.I have not laughed like that in a long time. When Sunday late morning came,I did not want to check out.We will definitely be back at the Abbey.

I've read the former reviews. The Abbey is Victorian, fellow travelers. Efforts have been made to keep the furniture, furnishings, accommodations as authentic as possible. For us, it is a privilege to stay there -- the opportunity to stay in a Victorian time-capsule with so many collections, with so much of the Victorian color and artwork surrounding you, it is like being in a museum.

Innkeeper Jay Schatz met us on arrival and had us laughing from that moment on. He is quite an entertainer, especially with his hat and prop collection. Jay is also a very serious historian and ecologist. Don't miss his entertaining and historic stories during the afternoon teas and breakfasts - which are delicious! The common rooms were full of history and elegance. Our bedrooms were also authentically decorated and very comfortable. Our stay was a delightful experience!

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon at The Abbey and we had a wonderful time. The Inn has on site parking and is just one block to the beach...this was a joy as so many places don't provide parking. Breakfast and tea were warm and satisfying times with other guests. Staff did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable....even finding restaurants and kayaking for us. Don't miss a traditional B&B stay..this is the way it should be!!!

We just returned from 2 nights at The Abbey. The grounds and porch were not kept. The furniture on the porch was broken and cushions dirty. After a certain time the common areas (living room, sitting room, dining room ) were locked and not accessible leaving the only place to stay, your room. The toilet in our room needed to be flushed at least twice. The shower was scalding hot ...not being able to regulate the hot and cold with different water pressure at all times. The only real pluses for the Abbey were off street parking and beach tags.
