We had a lovely 2-night visit to this B&B in August 08. It is definitely one for people who are happy staying in someone's home, rather than a hotel, and it suited our family just fine. We had an enormous family room, the beds were comfy and the breakfasts were delicious. It is also in a terrific location, a very short walk from the park and some delightful shopping and dining areas.

Mrs. Butterworth was a sweetheart (her dogs were sweet, too) and made sure my stay at her home was very comfortable. The house itself is charming, as are the rooms. Mine had a very nice bathroom attached which was very nice. I would highly reccommend this B & B and hope to stay there again in the future.

We recently stayed at the Becon Hill B&B and had a fabulous time. Susan Butterworth is a very welcoming hostess and prepares a delicious breakfast (homemade granola). Great location and good for kids, too.

We'll keep it brief, but I must say that staying at the Beacon Hill B & B was a total pleasure from start to finish--a lot like being true houseguests. The embrace of Susan Butterworth was felt in all that she did for us re finding the true Boston..great suggestions and ways of getting there--hidden wonderful restaurants, the works. Thank you Ms. Butterworth!!! We'll be back!

We were greeted by the owner Mrs. Butterworth. Upon entering, it was apparant that we were in the owner's, own home. The home was hot, dark and had a musty smell. There were two very pleasant dogs, which unfortunately just added to the musty aroma of the home. The owner also insisted that we keep all lights shut, whenever possible. This meant we had to leave the building dark, and arrive with it being equally dark. The home was neither fresh or inviting. We found used soap and shampoos in the bathrooms. We found used clothing hanging in the bedroom closets. Given the overall condition of the house, we were left with the opinion that this business was struggling. The website quoted air conditioning as an amenity, however we only found open windows and one table top fan per bedroom. The linens were musty, the couch had a dirty smell to it and there was enough dust on the upper hall table, that we literally "signed in" on the dusty surface. The upper hall ceiling was tall and we noticed the smoke alarm just sitting on that hall table. The other couple in our party also lost electricity in their bathroom. The owner blamed that on current construction on the third floor. We left for dinner and researched another hotel to stay at. We got back to pack and found the house to be completely dark. The upper bedrooms were extremely hot. We packed, woke the owner up and advised that we were leaving. To owner said "nothing", as she closed and locked the door behind us. This explains why our deposit was requested via personal check. We left with the impression that the owner has experienced all of this before. We had no warning about construction at the site or that there was no air conditioning. We were deceived. We lost our deposit of $500.00, but we were able to salvage our much needed vacation by choosing to leave. Stay away from this place, Boston has so much more to offer.

Innkeeper Response
This IS my home, which I attempt to make clear wherever my listing appears. It is my belief that a successful stay is based on my meeting my guests' expectations. I hope to make you feel like my personal houseguests. I do have central a/c; if it isn't on because I don't think it's hot, or if you aren't cool enough, just ask! I have hard-wired smoke alarms on the ceilings, as required by law; a CO (carbon monoxide) detector sits on a chest in the 2nd floor hall between the bedrooms where now a lamp burns all night, to augment the interior vestibule light. I practice energy conservation and invite guests to use as needed the on/off electrical switches I show them upon arrival. The report of no electricity in a bathroom for 2-3 hours is true, as was my explanation. Before their return from dinner an electrician had remedied the situation; this had never happened before, nor has it since. Linens are washed every few days and are obviously clean at check-in, so they cannot be musty. These guests left hours after they arrived so have no credibility rating food never served! As a woman alone awakened, prudence dictated not engaging in conversation four large angry people carrying alot of baggage down my interior stairs. Had I been given an opportunity, I certainly would have refunded their deposit as the situation arose from my failure to meet their expectations. Never before have I had anyone leave my home after unpacking and be vindictive enough to do everything possible to shut down my b&b. I'd be delighted to answer any questions you might have and hope that you will read the critique considering that this is but one guest's feelings out of the hundreds who have stayed with me over the years. Happy guests generally don't write critiques sadly!

Susan is a perceptive host whom manages to make everyone feel at home. The stay was non intrusive but not off putting. My husband and I felt very much at ease in our room and the house as a whole and who can beat the welcome of 2 well behaved pooches. We felt very much at home and hope to return in the future. Would very much recommend to friends and family. Great neighborhood and architecture and a sense of calm and peace. We just returned from a five year stint in Saudi Arabia and this slice of USA was very welcoming!
