Preheat oven to 350 and butter an 8 x 11.5 glass casserole dish.
Combine dry ingredients in large bowl, add softened butter and mix well with fork.
Combine milk and egg in small bowl, whisk until creamy, and stir into dry ingredients, mixing well.
(optional step) If you like, stir in 1/4 cup chopped nuts or dried fruit.
Pour into buttered dish, making sure that dry ingredients are covered. Bake for approx. 22 minutes, or until edges are brown and oatmeal is set. Cut into squares and serve warm, with fried apples or peaches.
