Warm and Spicy Pears

Cook time: 15 minutes
Servings: 4

  • 1 16 0z. Can of pear halves
  • 1/3 cup Packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon Fresh ground nutmeg (from the health food section of your grocery store)
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • Heavy Whipping Cream - whipped and sweetened to taste

  1. Drain syrup from pears into a heavy 1 quart saucepan; set the pears aside.
  2. Add the brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon to the syrup. Bring to a boil over a medium high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  3. Add pears, stir slightly and then simmer about 5 minutes more or until heated through.
  4. We serve two of the warmed pear halves per person with some of the cooked syrup in stemmed dessert dishes as a fruit starter for our breakfasts during the cold winter months in Minnesota.
  5. A dollop of whipped cream added to the top of each serving at the last minute adds a wonderful flavor and reminds us of a melting snow drift. For an added touch during the holidays, sprinkle a little green decorating sugar on the whipped cream and add a cherry on top.
