Classic front of a federalist home. These houses were built in the period 1790 to around 1820 as the New England maritime economy produced great wealth in the area. Portico on the front employs period design but likely was added at a later time for convenience in bad weather.

The cheery colors, the wide pine floors, roominess and elegant furnishings. The names of all of the rooms at the Greenleaf Inn reflect actual names of clipper ships built in Newburyport in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. These graceful sailing ships brought great wealth to the shores of the Merrimac River.
The Ashburton Room on the third floor is a premium suite with antiques, queen bed, fireplace, window alcove, recliner, private bath, TV, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. The Rutherford fireplace can be seen just over the foot of the bed. The features paneling, wide pine floors and a feel of roominess. The Delia Walker on the third floor is a standard suite with antqiues, queen bed, fireplace, window alcove, recliner, private bath, TV, refrigerator, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. Notice the exposed overhead beams. This room has a skylight to give it a wonderful ligthness and nice feel. Wide pine floors and Rugtherford fireplace compliment the room.
