Record number of tour registrants see a plethora of birds during festival
By Carol Broeder & Ainslee S. Wittig/Arizona range news
The 2012 Wings Over Willcox is one for the record books, according to numbers compiled this weekend by Connie Bonner with the Willcox Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. "We had 503 people signed up for tours," said Bonner, explaining that 450 was the highest number they had in the past.
There were 48 tours, with 35 of them sold out as of press time before the festival. The 2011 festival saw 441 registrants, she told the Range News. "Right now, we're estimating that more than 135 species were spotted" on the various tours. Tour Guide Vivian MacKinnon said, "The mega-flock of Lark Buntings was one of the most spectacular things I've ever seen in my life."The sky around our van was black with them," she said. "At one point we could see nothing but birds. Nothing. Steve Marlatt, tour guide for the Northbound Hawk Stalk on Saturday afternoon, said the group saw a Prairie Falcon and a Golden Eagle, the highlights of the tour, plus a great variety of predators, including Ferruginous, Red Tailed, Harris and Northern Harrier hawks, as well as smaller falcons - the Merlin and Kestrel, and a Great Horned Owl. "We went to the Stewart District - it was a great trip!" Marlatt said. "It's been an amazing festival, " said WOW Chairman Homer Hansen, noting the "spectacular turnout. The new high is a huge increase," he said.
"The turn out at the Community Center was fantastic," said Bonner, adding, "We easily had 1,000 people that went through the building. At one point, we had 70 or 80 people in one of the seminars," she said. "We had the best attendance ever for the seminars."And those record numbers may have translated into a boost to the local economy. "The Holiday Inn Express sold out both Friday and Saturday nights," said Hansen, adding, "They felt that 98-percent of them were there for the festival. They had many walk-ins and many that came later and had to go elsewhere to book a room," he told the Range News.
With this year's festival just a month prior to the centennial of Arizona's statehood on Feb. 14, 1912, WOW committee members and volunteers planned "a spectacular festival with a Centennial theme." The tours and seminars highlighted Arizona from 100 years ago, with the theme of how things were in the Sulphur Springs Valley during this time period.
There were three new seminars, "Willcox 1800 to Statehood," "Paving the Way to Statehood," and "Geronimo, the General, and the Hummingbird," and two new tours, "History of Willcox Playa," and "The Story of Dos Cabezas."
"The Story of Dos Cabezas," which included history of the former mining and now ghost town by Jon Samuelson, owner of the historical Dos Cabezas Spirit and Nature Retreat Bed & Breakfast, along with its history as a "Hostess House" of the infamous T.N. McCauley, who wined and dined prospects as he asked then to invest in the legendary Mascot Mine. Samuelson also narrated the human-caused evolution of area wildlife habitats the past one hundred years. Carol Wien, a fourth-generation rancher in Dos Cabezas and co-author of "The Story of Dos Cabezas" with Phyllis de la Garza, told the history of ranching in Dos Cabezas, the Dos Cabezas Pioneer Cemetery, and the Butterfield Stage trail.
Some notes from the two history lessons:
• B&B owners Jon and Charmayne Samuelson bought the Dos Cabezas Ranch House from artists/instrument makers Paul and Mary Duncan. The house has been continually lived-in since the 1800s. They have two rooms for guests and a museum inside.
• With 4,000 people in its mining heyday, Dos Cabezas, an Arizona Ghost Town, now has 29 people.
• After the Gold Rush started in 1848, and the Birch and Butterfield mail routes ran through Ewell Station near Ewell Springs, gold quartz was discovered in the area.
• Dos Cabezas Mining District was formed, but was incorrectly spelled as 'Dos Cabezos' in 1879, and not changed until 1925, "which made my Grandma mad," said Carol Wien.
• In 1906, Captain Tibby and Mr. Page (who suddenly becomes 'T.N. McCauley') arrived to buy mining claims. Despite the fact that McCauley, "was quite a scam artist," he was loved by many for his wining and dining ways and built the town up with a school, power plant, a tramway to the mine, and a railroad spur - the Mascot and Western.
A particular treat was hearing the Dos Cabezas Trio: siblings Carol and Robert Wien and John Samuelson, played several tunes with their autoharp, harmonica and guitar, respectively.
The group also visited the Dos Cabezas Mountain Gallery to shop from award-winning artists, visit with Jim Turner, author of "Arizona: A Celebration of the Grand Canyon State," and enjoy treats of hot cider and cookies.
"Everyone keeps saying, 'Wings is even better than last year.'" Hansen said Monday."I don't know how it can get better because it's just great." And even the weather cooperated, with the rain holding off until later on Sunday. "Next year is the twentieth anniversary, and we already have a lot of excited tour leaders, volunteers, and committee members," Hansen told the Range News. "We just got done with this festival, and even though they're tired, they're enthusiastic about next year."
WINGS OVER WILLCOX JAN 11-15, 2012.
Dos Cabezas Spirit and Nature Retreat B & B is proud to donate lodging for the Wings Over Willcox (WOW) guest speaker. This year the honored guest is Ted Floyd, famed naturalist and author.
Presentation: "Birding at Night: The Final Frontier"
Ted Floyd's banquet presentation will introduce us to the amazing world of birding at night. Many birds are surprisingly easy to observe at night. And it's not just owls, but also lots of birds we often think of as being active only by day: thrushes and thrashers, warblers and sparrows, and many more. And the things they do at night are extraordinary.Ted's talk will show us how to find birds at night. It's easy! Yet most people are unaware of the surprising "night life" of the bird world. Birding at night is an unexplored frontier for most of us. Ted will take us on a tour of the new frontier of nocturnal birding, and he will tell us how nocturnal birding is helping the cause of bird conservation. "Birding at Night: The Final Frontier" will open your mind to an entirely new conception of birding. Warning: Going birding at night is thoroughly addictive. As a result of hearing and seeing Ted's presentation, you may find yourself increasingly sleep-deprived, unable to stay in bed and indoors during the nighttime hours! Ted Floyd is the Editor of Birding, the flagship publication of the American Birding Association. He has published widely on birds and ecological topics. Ted has written more than 125 articles, with contributions to scholarly journals such as Ecology, Oecologia, Animal Behaviour, Journal of Animal Ecology, and Trends in Ecology and Evolution and contributions to popular magazines such as Natural History, Birdwatcher's Digest, and Birding. He has contributed chapters to textbooks and guidebooks published by Oxford University Press, Houghton Mifflin, and National Geographic. He is senior author of the Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Nevada (University of Nevada Press, 2007), author of the Smithsonian Field Guide to the Birds of North America (HarperCollins, 2008), and coauthor with Bill Schmoker of Let's Go Birding! (American Birding Association, 2009).
